General Summary:

The Research Specialist will have an understanding of and demonstrated skill in techniques involved inin vitroand highly specializedin vivo(in particular, murine) models of mycobacterial infection and the evaluation of drug efficacy. The individual will rely on knowledge and experience to assist in the planning and conduct of a pre-clinical research program in antibiotic development for treatment of tuberculosis and infections with other mycobacteria includingMycobacterium abscessus. Under general supervision, the individual will be assigned projects for step-wise assessment of the activity of new drugsin vitroand in mouse models and will be responsible for developing protocols for PI approval, conduct of the experiments, initial data collection, analysis and processing for presentations or manuscripts. He/she will also be responsible for drafting relevant sections of reports and manuscripts for publication. The individual will work with the PI to design, implement and manage the overall research program. Interactions include coordinating studies with other research personnel, “hands-on” work with the models, supervision of technicians and/or students, consultation with outside experts and custom orders and purchasing from vendors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement and manage the research program in concert with the PI
  • Draft relevant sections of reports for PI approval
  • Drafts/ develop and write experimental protocols for PI approval
  • Coordinate, supervise and actively participate in conduct ofin vitroand animal experiments to evaluate new drug candidates and resistant mutants
  • Collect, organize and analyze experimental data for presentation and publication
  • Drafts methodology section of manuscripts for publication, and may participate in working on working on other sections.
  • Monitor inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies
  • Cultivation of pathogenic bacteria, includingMycobacterium tuberculosis
  • Handle bio-hazardous material under Biosafety Level 2 and Biosafety Level 3 conditions without supervision
  • Infect animals through the aerosol route without supervision
  • Administer antibiotics or other anti-infectives to animals using injection or oral gavage without supervision
  • Interact with faculty, lab and administrative staff, students, postdoctoral fellows, and outside vendors
  • Train new employees, fellows, and students in laboratory techniques
  • Meet weekly with the PI and select staff to review recent data, troubleshoot current experiments, review new experimental protocols and prioritize new experiments
  • Maintain records of attendance at regulatory/training sessions (e.g. biohazard, radiation safety, HIPPA etc.)
  • Order all lab supplies, purchases, and forward paperwork to admin staff
  • Demonstrate organization, curiosity, problem solving, resourcefulness, and flexibility.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, with an emphasis in microbiology and/or antimicrobial drug development and experience working with rodent models. Additional graduate-level training strongly preferred. Position requires pro-active individual who works well independently and as a team member to complete projects, supervise entry level staff, and draft protocols and manuscripts.

Experience:

One year of experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques required. Experience in mycobacteriology and/or anti-bacterial drug development strongly preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Positions requires pro-active individual who works autonomously to complete projects, supervise, staff, and draft grant proposals and publications. Experience in Word, Excel, PowerPoint is preferred.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
