The Department of Counseling and Educational Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Education (SOE) invites applications for two open-rank positions (assistant/associate/full) for clinical and/or research professorships in the Counseling Program beginning August 1, 2021. SOE offers two counseling MS tracks, School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and a graduate certificate program. The current positions are designated for clinical mental health counseling or school counseling. The School of Education ranks #15 among the nation’s finest graduate education programs according to the latest ranking from U.S. News and World Report, and Johns Hopkins is ranked #11 in the global ranking of all universities. The positions:

The Counseling program seeks candidates with deep knowledge, teaching experience, and ongoing engagement in research and scholarship. Preferred teaching areas are career, addictions, counseling youth and adolescents, or school counseling. Successful candidates will be expected to teach 4-6 courses per year across traditional and distance learning formats. They will also supervise and advise students, provide leadership, and participate in professional service at the program, school, university, state, regional, and national levels. Opportunities exist for the selected candidate to serve on doctoral committees.

SOE has two faculty promotion tracks, research and clinical. Research faculty are expected to teach four courses per year and engage in scholarly productivity at the highest level. Clinical faculty are expected to teach six courses per year and engage in scholarship that is oriented toward towards the development of usable knowledge. These positions are open to faculty interested in either track, and candidates are encouraged to indicate their preference in their cover letter.

Requirements for the position: Successful candidates will

  • have earned a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited program;
  • demonstrate a strong record of scholarly activity commensurate with the selected track and rank. For the research track this would include refereed journal articles, book chapters, published books, and the potential for additional scholarly production. For clinical faculty this would include a history of scholarly production focused on clinical practice;
  • demonstrate a history of obtaining external funding and the potential to obtain grant funding commensurate with either the research or clinical track. Research track faculty, especially at a senior level, are expected to have a strong track record of significant grant funding;
  • have significant experience in teaching and clinical supervision;
  • exhibit expertise in advising, guiding, and mentoring counseling students;
  • have full-time professional counseling and supervisory experience, as well as eligibility as a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) in Maryland or significant experience as a school counselor;
  • demonstrate the ability to successfully teach in a highly diverse urban setting with a high population of international students; and
  • possess knowledge of the CACREP and ASCA standards.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
