Dartmouth College seeks an Associate Director to provide leadership, administrative oversight, and operational execution for the Department of Safety and Security. This is an important opportunity for an experienced and skillful professional to have a significant impact on the effectiveness of the Department, and the safety and well-being of the Dartmouth College community and its members.

Reporting directly to the Director of the Department, this is a visible and vital opportunity for a skilled communicator, staff leader, and organizational manager who is well-versed in best security practices and technology. The Associate Director must be committed to Dartmouth’s mission and core values as a residential liberal arts institution with deep history and tradition. As a strategic thinker with demonstrated ability to build relationships with a wide range of campus and external constituents, the Associate Director will help lead the Department and the Dartmouth community in pursing academic excellence in the spirit of safety and security and community responsibility.

In serving as second in command and deputy to the Director, the Associate Director will bring significant security or law enforcement experience, strong leadership and management skills, and demonstrated organizational, analytical, strategic thinking and communication abilities. The Associate Director will join the Director in improving the operational functioning of the Department by examining its procedures, protocols, and practices while focusing on the training and professional development of its staff. The next Associate Director will bring a skilled understanding of community safety and security to a unionized environment and a changing student population. A commitment to diversity and inclusion is a priority, and demonstrated understanding of security in higher education.

The Associate Director will address a set of key opportunities and challenges in helping to lead the Department of Safety and Security. These include the review and improvement of the Department’s policies, procedures, operations and organizational structure to ensure efficiency and effectiveness, as well as compliance for attaining accreditation via IACLEA; providing exemplary public safety services to all members of the Dartmouth community; supporting and professionally developing a high caliber public safety team; establishing connections and relationships with external groups, including collaborative working relations with local, state, and federal authorities and agencies; using technology in innovative ways to help accomplish the work of the Department; and improving communications with the Dartmouth community, including leadership, faculty, students and staff.
