Department Profile:

The department (www.comm.msstate.edu) is one of the largest on campus. Approximately 600 majors are in concentrations of Broadcast & Digital Journalism, Communication Studies, Print & Digital Journalism, Public Relations, and Theatre. Students may choose concentrations in more than one area, and minors are offered in each concentration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the activities below. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses related to the production of news in both broadcast and digital forms. Chief among these will be the broadcast capstone course, which mimics an active newsroom for one full day per week culminating in a live newscast. Other courses could include a combination of Television Production, Advanced Television Production, Backpack Journalism, News Writing, and Broadcast Performance. This position will also advise undergraduate students in their coursework selection.

The successful candidate will have a 4/4 course load (or equivalent duties) for fall and spring semesters. Summer teaching is often available, but is not guaranteed. The successful candidate will assist with the continuing development of curriculum in the Broadcasting and Digital Journalism concentration and lead in the overall enhancement of the evolving program.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Master's degree with coursework related to communication is preferred but a Bachelor's degree will be considered if there is a minimum of ten years of substantial professional experience in the broadcast industry. Past experience as a broadcast reporter is a must.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference is given to broadcast professionals who have substantial experience in broadcast new direction and production. The candidate should have experience in the following: reporting and producing, broadcast production, web-based journalism, non-linear video editing, and working in an Adobe Creative Cloud environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The successful candidate must have a thorough knowledge of the field and a willingness to participate collegially in a broad department. Colleagues must be able to communicate that knowledge in the classroom environment to students as well as to other important groups through scholarship and service. Working Conditions and Physical Effort

The successful candidate must be able to teach in a classroom setting, work in a studio, and conduct service in the profession.
