Assistant, Associate or Full Professor


The Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences (https://medschool.ucsd.edu/vchs/) is committed to academic, scientific, and clinical excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.

The T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion at UC San Diego invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate or Full Professor position. Candidates with non-tenured appointments will also be considered for appointment as a T. Denny Sanford Endowed Chair in Empathy and Compassion Research.

The Sanford Institute seeks candidates whose research, teaching, and/or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to excellence, diversity, and inclusion in higher education. Candidates are expected to establish a rigorous program of high-quality research and to pursue research and teaching activities aligned with the mission of the Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion. An interest in contributing to empathy and compassion mentoring programs at UC San Diego is also expected.

Candidates must have a PhD in health sciences or related fields and/or MD degree or equivalent. Candidates with an MD must have or be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California and have be board eligible or certified in their related field.

Preference will be given to outstanding scholars who: (a) conduct basic or applied research relevant to the understanding of empathy and/or compassion, (b) have made contributions relevant to the field of social psychology/neuroscience, and (c) demonstrate the potential for future contributions to this field of study.

Successful candidates will hold a primary appointment in a UC San Diego department, with the department determined by mutual interest of candidate and department.

The appropriate series and appointment will be at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor Rank based on candidate's experience and qualifications. Series will include Ladder Rank, In-Residence with secured extramural funding and Clinical X.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales. Appointments may require candidates to be self-funded. As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited.
