The Faculty of Engineering is inviting applications from qualified candidates for an Associate Professor/ Professor of Biomedical Engineering position.   In addition to the regular academic responsibilities, the successful candidate will also assume the role of Program Director for the Biomedical Engineering undergraduate program for a three-year renewable term.  This Program is shared between the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Department of Mechanical Engineering (MECH) and this tenured position will reside within the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

We seek candidates with notable accomplishments and experience in Biomedical Engineering research, inspiring academic leadership, and excellence in teaching and scholarship, who are interested in enhancing the educational mission of the Program. Candidates for the position must have a PhD in biomedical, mechanical, electrical engineering or similar field; industry experience would be an asset.  In collaboration with the Department Chair, the Program Director will: 1) Provide academic leadership for the Biomedical Engineering Program in consultation with the ECE and MECH Departments; 2)  Ensure the curriculum of the Biomedical Engineering Program meets the program’s goals and strategic plan, accreditation needs, and enable synergy between the academic program and research programs; 3) Provide vision and develop strategy for the program, as well as managing and coordinating the program’s human and fiscal resources; 4) Support the new Professional Masters of Biomedical Systems Program; 5) Represent the Program within the University of Victoria, as well as to provincial and federal agencies,  key industry groups, partners and collaborators; 6) Provide leadership for the acquisition of internal and external resources. The expected start date for this position is July 1, 2021.

Our Biomedical Program was established in 2012 and it was the first of its kind in Western Canada. It is currently accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. The program currently has approximately 170 students enrolled at the undergraduate level. These students participate in our mandatory co-op program. Our program attracts excellent, highly motivated students as demonstrated by UVic Engineering’s numerous successful competition teams including the BMed team, which placed second nationally in the Innovative Designs for Accessibility (IDeA) student competition in its first year (2019). Furthermore, many students are actively engaged in research lead by the program’s faculty through volunteer, co-op and in-course project opportunities, which leads to a research engaged learning environment. Our program has achieved gender balance and we are committed to increasing diversity and inclusion in our program and the Faculty as a whole. The program is supported by 22 tenure and tenure-track faculty members from Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Computer Science including two Canada Research Chairs in Biomedical Engineering. The Biomedical Engineering Program benefits from participation of its faculty in the multi-disciplinary Center for Biomedical Research and will soon be bolstered by a planned Professional Master’s (MEng) program in Biomedical Systems, which will lead to an expansion of our student body, teaching and research capabilities, and industrial interactions. As well, the program will act as the catalyst to potentially offer a research-based Master’s program (MASc) and Ph.D. program in Biomedical Engineering.

The successful candidate’s research, teaching, and service will need to be at the levels described for a Research Stream faculty member of the Associate Professor or Professor rank as described in the collective agreement between the Faculty Association and the University, the Faculty Evaluation Policy, and the Departments’ Unit Standards.  To support accreditation of our engineering programs by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board, the successful candidate must obtain either the P.Eng or the Eng.L. license, issued by the Engineers and Geoscientists BC within two years of the candidate’s appointment.
