Assistant Clinical Professor, University Honors
The University of Maryland’s University Honors program invites applications for a faculty position to begin January 2021. The Assistant Clinical Professor position offers a 2.5-year, full-time appointment with a competitive salary and generous benefits. Applications from all disciplines are welcome. This faculty position offers a rare opportunity to incubate and test innovative pedagogy, co-design and independently teach creative new courses, and mentor undergraduate students, all in the context of a thriving living-learning community. Assistant Clinical Professors are involved in all aspects of the program, including:
- teaching, including course instruction (approx. 12 credit hours per academic year) and student mentorship both in and beyond the classroom;
- curriculum and program development, including course design and curriculum assessment; and
- participation in the life of the program (e.g., cocurricular activities).
The Assistant Clinical Professor will join a team of tenure-stream University of Maryland faculty, drawn from different academic disciplines, in a thematic “cluster,” and will contribute one of three independently-taught courses that take up the theme of “Virtually Human.”Being human may involve exhibiting and/or performing traits that distinguish us from other kinds of beings. But debates about the moral and legal significance of our humanity—and even about who among us fully qualifies as human—have raged for centuries. Institutions, theorists, and communities have introduced exclusionary definitions aimed at denying agency and social standing to broad swaths of the population. Identities such as indigeneity, race, and gender have been exploited to define people as nearly, but not fully human. Even as laws and norms work to deny them, the oppressed have found expansive ways to demand and assert their selfhood through protest, art, and play. As those longstanding debates and struggles continue, questions concerning full and authentic humanity are arising in altogether new contexts as well. Is it possible for a computer to count as fully human by exhibiting and performing some number of distinctively human traits? Ought the legal protections for human subjects be extended to corporations? This cluster explores what it means to assert and perform our humanity in all the ways we appear and in all the environments we inhabit.
In their first semester, the Assistant Clinical Professor will develop a 20-person seminar that draws on their disciplinary expertise and relates to the theme of “Virtually Human.” Over the course of their 2.5-year appointment, the Assistant Clinical Professor will teach that seminar and also contribute to the broader curriculum by teaching first-year and capstone seminars. - Ph.D., or other terminal degree, from an accredited academic institution
- Track record of scholarly potential in field of expertise
- Experience and expertise in undergraduate teaching that demonstrates inclusive practices
- Demonstrable potential to work independently as well as collaboratively
- Record of innovative course design and/or pedagogy
- Online teaching and/or course design experience
- Familiarity and/or experience with undergraduate living-learning programs
- Participation in undergraduate cocurricular programming
- Demonstrably inclusive communication practices and interpersonal skills
- Letter of application that explains how your teaching experience, proposed course, and scholarly activity relate to the theme “Virtually Human.”
- Proposal for theme-related course, including course title, course description (2-4 paragraphs), and suggested readings, assessments, and/or activities
- Curriculum vitae
- Teaching portfolio, including evidence of teaching that demonstrates inclusive practices (e.g., past syllabi, student and/or peer evaluations) and statement of teaching philosophy
