The Department of Biological Sciences invites applications for a
Senior Staff Associate II for IT Resources. Reporting to the
Director of Academic Administration and Finance and the Chair, the
Senior Staff Associate II provides the following IT and computing
services to the Department of Biological Sciences:
-Manage the Department’s Shared Computing Facility located in Room
705 Mudd, including overseeing the Staff Associate who is also
assigned to the unit to ensure that adequate coverage of all tasks
and responsibilities of the IT group are met. This includes
ensuring that all hardware and software in the department is
running properly. This includes Windows, Macintosh and Linux OS
systems. The candidate will also ensure that every authorized user
has access to all shared departmental equipment and that they are
running properly.
-Provide shared centralized server space to each lab on the
departmental file servers, maintain servers for individual labs
when needed, and review and suggest to Chair and Department
Academic Administrator the needs of the facility (hardware
upgrades, maintenance contracts, IT infrastructure, etc.).
-Provide advice to PIs and their research team, as well as the
department’s administrative staff, to choose the most appropriate
computer systems to meet their computing goals.
-Perform new system installs, system maintenance and updates, and
assist PIs and department staff with IT security (installing
security updates, anti-virus software, monitoring security logs,
keeping up to date with security journals).
-Perform Departmental and lab server data backups and data
restores, and disk management (monitoring the RAID arrays for
errors, managing space and adding additional drives as needed), web
server management (managing and securing the department web servers
and app servers). Incumbent will also advise on alternative back-up
options at the university such as AWS services and the High
Performance Clusters.
-Perform user management for specific departmental software suites
(IT Works, Matlab, etc.), installing and adding, removing and
modifying users accounts. Provides Support (training new users,
consulting with vendors when problems occur, negotiating for
equipment and services) and on-call system support 24 hours/day,
365 days/year.
-Assist in installing and maintaining specialized software and be
available for general consultations on computer and IT related
topics to all members of the Department of Biological Sciences.
Minimum Degree Required:
Master’s Degree in related field
Minimum Qualifications:
Detailed understanding of computer OS including Windows, Macintosh
and Linux as well as thorough knowledge of computer hardware and
software.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of scientific software a plus
