The Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University invites nominations and applications for the position of Head of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE). This is an outstanding opportunity for an accomplished scholar with leadership experience, in collaboration with a growing faculty and an enterprising Dean, to further strengthen an exceptional department at the nation’s first research university. The best candidates will embody the intellectual distinction, entrepreneurial capacity, collaborative spirit, transparency, inclusiveness, and creativity that characterize the School’s culture, along with a scholarly record deserving appointment as tenured full professor at The Johns Hopkins University. Serving a renewable five-year term, the Head will be appointed as a full-time tenured faculty member in ECE and will be encouraged to remain active in research, with strategic leadership of the Department as their top priority.

Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE), one of the Whiting School’s nine departments, now comprises 24 core tenure-line faculty (i.e. faculty whose primary appointment is in ECE) plus nearly 20 additional tenure-line faculty whose primary appointment is in either another Whiting School department or in the School of Medicine. The Department’s current tenure-line faculty comprises 14 Full, six Associate, and five Assistant professors. In addition, the Department supports more than 15 research and teaching faculty. Nearly 30% of the Department’s faculty have been appointed in the last five years, bringing fresh ideas and the potential to grow and strengthen new research directions.

ECE’s research strengths can be described in two broad themes: human-centric science and engineering, and cyber-physical science and systems. In their own labs and in centers, ECE faculty have developed highly-respected research programs in a number of areas:

  • Human-language processing, exemplified in Center for Speech and Language Processing and the Human Language Technology Center of Excellence
  • Photonics
  • Imaging, exemplified in the Center for Imaging Science
  • Systems engineering
  • Robotics, including in the Laboratory for Computational Sensors & Robotics
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning, exemplified in the Institute for Data-Intensive Engineering and Science and the Mathematical Institute for Data Science and
  • Human health technology, exemplified by the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare

ECE’s current enrollment comprises more than 149 undergraduate and approximately 163 graduate students (MS and PhD). Electrical Engineering historically sees larger undergraduate enrollments than Computer Engineering, which is a program jointly managed between ECE and the Computer Science department, which is also in the Whiting School. At the graduate level, ECE currently has 120 students pursing their doctoral degrees and some 43 students enrolled in its terminal Master of Science in Engineering program and in ECE’s areas of the Whiting School’s part-time Engineering for Professionals (EP) degree program.

The Department’s operating budget, not including faculty salaries and fringe, is roughly $2.5M. In the 2019 calendar year, research expenditures were approximately $17.3M. ECE has consistently ranked among the top 20 ECE departments in US News & World Report. More information about the Department is available at https://engineering.jhu.edu/ece/ .

Whiting School Dean Ed Schlesinger is committed to providing the support that will enable the Department to substantially advance its mission. The appointment of a department Head establishes the Head’s expanded scope of responsibility for vision and direction; for faculty, staff, and students; for financial resources and space; for research and scholarship; and for fundraising and alumni relations. The Dean expects to partner closely with the Head in advocating for the department, including with substantial engagement in fundraising activities, which will be additionally supported by University expertise and resources.

The new Head will be an entrepreneurial and proven leader who can inspire faculty, staff, and students in a shared governance environment. Together, they will have the ability inclusively to develop a compelling vision to establish ECE as a hub for electrical or computer engineering research and as a site of innovation, teaching, and translation. They will have strong skills for mentoring junior faculty and will promote the interests of the entire department. Fundraising experience is preferred. The Department Head will have a dossier that embodies a strong track record of scholarship and teaching, a passionate commitment to research, discovery, and application; and an interest in and success at academic administration.

Expected educational background and qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate in electrical and computer engineering or a closely related field and a scholarly record deserving appointment as tenured full professor at The Johns Hopkins University;
  • Recognized leadership in their respective field of electrical or computer engineering with a distinguished national and international reputation for research and education;
  • Excellent communication skills in both internal and external interactions;
  • A strong commitment to diversity and inclusion at all levels among faculty, students, and staff, along with measurable and sustained impact on the diversity and inclusiveness of organizations they have led or been part of; and
  • Leadership experience within a complex research environment or in national/international organizations connected to the field of electrical or computer engineering.

The Whiting School of Engineering has engaged Opus Partners ( www.opuspartners.net ) to support the recruitment of the MSE Department Head. Craig Smith, Partner, and Jeff Stafford, Senior Associate, are leading the search. Applicants should submit a single PDF containing a letter of interest outlining their research and leadership experience, their CV, and a two or three-page statement of research interests online via Interfolio, by clicking the "Apply Now" button.
