Dean

Stetson University School of Music

DeLand, Florida

The Stetson University School of Music seeks a visionary leader to guide an artistic community of dedicated faculty, staff, students and concertgoers in advancing our mission of fostering a broad educational experience and enhancing the positive impact of music making in our world.

Position: The dean of the School of Music serves as an advocate, leader and effective spokesperson for the school and university and is a key member of the provost's leadership team. The dean will work with faculty to advance a progressive academic plan for the school that enhances student learning effectiveness, faculty creative activity, and the school's national and international reputation. The successful candidate will participate in advancing the academic priorities of Stetson University through the work of the school and in collaboration with other university schools, colleges and departments.  The dean will work closely with university leaders in enrollment management, marketing, and development to meet the recruiting, promotional and relational goals of the School of Music.

Qualifications: The School of Music will hire a dean who can demonstrate significant successful leadership experience, a commitment to Stetson’s mission and values, familiarity with many aspects of music learning, an appreciation for both academic and artistic musical education, and the ability to cultivate productive relationships in support of the school’s strategic priorities. Applicants should hold the academic credentials and standing required for tenure at Stetson University and the rank of professor in the School of Music. Preference is given to candidates with a terminal degree in a music field, although commensurate professional experience in music will be considered. The successful candidate will be active in and connected to the work of regional and national music associations.

Stetson University and the School of Music: Stetson’s School of Music is one of the premier undergraduate-only music schools in the country. At Stetson, the art of teaching is practiced through programs grounded in a tradition of liberal learning that stimulates critical thinking, imaginative inquiry and creative expression. The art of learning is enhanced through small interactive classes, close student-faculty alliances and collaborative approaches that provide the foundation for rewarding careers and advanced study in selective graduate and professional programs.

Following 11 remarkable years under the presidency of Dr. Wendy B. Libby, July 2020 marked the welcome of Stetson’s 10th president, Dr. Christopher F. Roellke. President Roellke brings a depth of success in academic preparation, student support, development and leadership that is already redounding to Stetson as it navigates the world pandemic. Stetson University is ranked No. 4 in the South by U.S. News & World Report as a regional university and has recently completed a successful $200 million comprehensive campaign. The university continues to emphasize the importance of diverse and inclusive thought in meeting its educational and community mission, and it encourages all of its members to demonstrate personal integrity; embrace leadership in an increasingly complex, interdependent and technological world; and commit to active forms of social responsibility.

To Apply: Applications, nominations and inquiries may be directed in confidence to SOMdeansearch@stetson.edu or directly to Provost Noel Painter, search co-chair, at provost@stetson.edu. Electronic submissions should include a letter of interest, current resume and a list of no less than three references with contact information. Application review will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. See www.stetson.edu/musicdean for more information.

Stetson University, an Equal Opportunity Employer, affirms the values and goals of diversity and strongly encourages the applications of all candidates, including women and candidates from historically under-represented groups.
