Academic Excellence and Student Performance is responsible for the further development, implementation, and evaluation of the university-wide initiative to impact retention, persistence, and graduation rates at Fisk University. The Director facilitates the development, implementation and ongoing maintenance of AESP. Additionally, The Director provides administrative, programmatic and counseling support to meet the goals and retention objectives of the program.

  • Direct and administer the overall operations of Academic Excellence and Student Performance (AESP) Program.
    • Assure the program operates in compliance with the terms and conditions of the grant and federal
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of all aspects of the
    • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with areas of Financial Aid, Career Services and Admissions
    • Implement procedures to recruit peer tutors in critical academic areas of need
  • Instruct and/or supervise AESP counselors/advisors in instructing students in Freshman Orientation or other student success
    • Oversee the implementation of a student database for reporting and participant tracking.
      • Plan and administer the AESP budget in accordance with University policies and in compliance with grant requirements and authorize all
    • Interview, hire, select, train, supervise and evaluate project
      • Serve on university committees that are related to the goals and objectives of the AESP program and enhance academic retention opportunities for student participants
  • Provide personal, career, financial and academic advising and counseling to program
  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting for Title III Part B
  • Experience with program and budget management
    • Experience overseeing federally funded education programs and grant

In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the manager based upon the requirements of the University.

  • Provides financial aid assistance and advising pertaining to both the FAFSA and aid in applying for any additional
  • Provides academic guidance to program participants regarding college course selection.
  • Plans, travels with and supervises cultural and academic activities/field trips and campus visits for program
  • Provides students with advice and assistance to encourage persistence, retention and success (graduation) at the graduate and professional
  • Identification and selection of program participants
  • Attend national, regional and state educational and professional conferences
  • Excellent organizational skills, goal oriented, excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience overseeing federally funded education programs and grant
  • Demonstrated understanding of and experience complying with Title III HBUC, Part B related regulations including EDGAR and OMB cost circulars,


  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to utilize counseling and advising techniques.
  • Develop and implement academic strategies that will improve retention and graduation rates for all students.
  • Familiarity with college admissions, and financial aid requirements

Supervises AESP Program staff and tutors.


Education: Master’s Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Education, Higher Education Administration preferred

Experience: Three-to-five years’ experience in higher education, including grant management, budgeting, staff supervision and program development and evaluation. Three years of experience providing support services such as advising, career counseling, personal counseling/guidance/coaching financial aid literacy to students in a college/university setting. Familiarity with challenges facing first-generation and/or low- income students. Experience interpreting and complying with federal regulations.
