Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Summer Studies and Special Programs, the Director of Adult and Non-Traditional Student Services understands the challenges often faced by adult learners in today’s university and provides leadership for the development and implementation of services, programs, and initiatives related to adult learners and non-traditional students at VCU . The Director integrates and communicates all aspects of student services and resources to provide seamless assistance to students in acquiring the information and services they need, including information about and access to intake processes, admissions, academic advising, financial aid, registration, transfer credit, degree completion pathways, and other resources. The Director develops partnerships within and outside the University to serve students, collaborates with others on approaches to marketing, and assists students and departments/schools in creating alternative pathways to degree completion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Create support systems to meet the needs of working adults, students at a distance, and other student populations that are considered adult learners and non-traditional degree completers
• Design systems and monitors for adult and non-traditional student matriculation including collaborating with appropriate offices of admissions, registration, advising, career services, student financial services, and new student orientation.
• Contribute to the success of VCU’s adult and non-traditional student population by developing communication strategies, retention practices, relationships with academic programs, and career linkages with the broader community.
• Develop effective support staff by recruiting and hiring qualified graduate assistants and providing effective training, supervision, and evaluation feedback.
• Actively collaborate and develop cooperative working relationships with colleagues, administrators, and staff within the Division and across the campus.
• Partner with Admissions and Transfer Center to create recruitment approaches that serve returning, adult and nontraditional students throughout the region while deploying a proactive approach that meets students’ needs.
• Contribute to the University’s mission in a positive way by researching new programs and approaches for adult and non-traditional students, identifying strategies to positively impact enrollment through coordinating with other campus offices as needed.
• Serve on appropriate University committees as assigned.
• Convene and collaborate with the Adult Learner Advisory Committee
• Contribute to the overall success of VCU by performing these duties in a manner consistent with the mission, goals, and values of the University and team expectations and performing all other essential duties as assigned.

Minimum Hiring Standards

• Master’s degree in Higher Education Leadership or related field.
• At least three years of experience working in a higher education institution, including administrative and/or managerial experience directly related to advising, programming, recruiting, and providing support services for adult and/or non-traditional students.
• Diverse experience in several of the following University functions: outreach activities, transfer credit evaluation, equity education, academic policies and procedures, and adult and/or continuing education programs.
• Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
• Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
• Ability to make sound academic decisions.
• Ability to identify with the needs and concerns of adult and non-traditional students.
• Ability to project a positive image of the University through public speaking and interaction with stakeholders.
• Ability to establish positive and effective working relationships with colleges and academic departments.
• Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

• Doctoral degree completed or in progress in Higher Education Leadership or related field.
• More than three years of experience working in a higher education institution, including administrative and/or managerial experience directly related to advising, programming, recruiting, and providing support services for adult and/or non-traditional students.
• Experience establishing new, cross-functional programs impacting student success.
