Minimum Qualifications


  • Requires a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university. Due to the work with our alumni population, Appalachian State graduates, both undergraduate and graduate, are strongly encouraged to apply. However, the selection will not be solely based on knowledge or experience with Appalachian State University.

Qualifications Required:

  • Work required knowledge and understanding of college experience and programs such as analytical communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor’s degree.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including some experience in public speaking.
  • Experience, comfort, and excitement to work with diverse groups of people in a collaborative team environment to accomplish desired outcomes and initiatives.
  • Ability to establish, maintain, and model effective professional relationships with alumni, students, and campus representatives.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work occasional evening and weekend events as needed.
  • Ability to travel independently both in and out of state utilizing university resources.
  • Ability to navigate and manage student group dynamics.
  • Ability and willingness to represent the Alumni Association and Appalachian State University in a positive manner to all constituents.
  • Proficiency in computer applications including advanced knowledge of Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work alongside and manage volunteers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Office of Alumni Affairs

  • Work with alumni, faculty, staff, and students to further the mission of the alumni association and promote the importance of alumni involvement through service, financial support, and engagement.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Young Alumni Committee and the Office of Alumni Affairs. Assist the Associate Director with the functions and operations of the committee.
  • Oversee and expand the Alumni Association’s current student outreach efforts with an emphasis on special events, networking opportunities, and educational programming.
  • Design and deliver meaningful opportunities to increase participation, volunteerism, and engagement among diverse student communities and young alumni.
  • Collaborate with other groups or teams within University Advancement to coordinate student engagement in other alumni activities, including regional alumni programming and constituency-based alumni programming opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with Student Affairs and other university departments, academic colleges, to facilitate engagement opportunities between all students (undergraduate and graduate) and alumni.
  • Develop initiatives to support the transition of students to young alumni status through in-person and virtual engagements.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and oversight of a student/alumni mentorship program.

Develop a Pipeline for Donors

  • Work alongside the Office of Annual Giving to engage with current students.
  • Engagement initiatives related to fundraising and stewardship may include Senior Class Gift, #iBackAPP Day, Senior Week programming, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Annual Giving on Young Alumni programming, outreach, and engagement.

Chapters, Networks and Alumni Volunteers

  • Assist the Associate Director in the recruitment, management, retainment, and training of alumni volunteers for meaningful and purposeful involvement for the Alumni Association and related university initiatives as applicable.
  • Assist with the outreach, planning, and philanthropic efforts of alumni chapters and network programs, including stewardship of volunteers, event attendance, and timely communication.

Diversity and Inclusion

  • Develop, lead, and facilitate opportunities to increase engagement among diverse alumni, allies, and students.
  • Work alongside identity-based network and geographical chapter program volunteers to ensure consistency, fulfillment, and the inclusion of all alumni through programming opportunities.
  • Collaborate with campus partners who lead App State diversity and inclusion efforts within the student population, and serve as a liaison and leader for parallel work with diverse alumni.

Student Ambassadors

  • Serve as the staff advisor for the Appalachian Student Ambassador organization, working collaboratively with the staff liaisons from the Office of Admissions, Office of Advancement and the Office of the Chancellor in coordinating the execution of the student organization’s overall mission.
  • Maintain oversight of the budget functions of the Appalachian Student Ambassadors.
  • Manage professional and interpersonal relationships within the Ambassador Organization and between outside entities.
