Washington University’s School of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the Urban Humanities beginning Fall, 2018.  The search is at the rank of tenure-track assistant professor and the appointment will be located in the Department of African and African American Studies. We seek scholars from within a broad range of humanities and humanistic social science disciplines (for example, art history, film and media, gender and women’s studies, history, languages, literature, music, performing arts, philosophy, religion, anthropology, sociology) with research interests in urbanism, race, and the built environment in Africa and/or the African diaspora (North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, South Asia).  We are especially interested in candidates who bring with them experience in or familiarity with architecture, the built environment, and urban design.  The successful applicant will be appointed in the Department of African and African American Studies.

Through the generous support of the Mellon Foundation's Architecture, Urbanism, and Humanities initiative, Washington University is in the midst of a four-year effort aimed at bringing humanities scholars into productive dialogue with architects, urban designers, and landscape architects.  This hire, along with a parallel appointment in Architecture and Urban Design, is aimed at building upon these efforts by forging sustainable and permanent connections between the Humanities, Architecture and Urban Design.

The successful candidate will teach classes in her/his areas of specialization, assist in the advising of AFAS majors, be active in research and publication, participate in departmental and university service and governance, and contribute to the interdisciplinary mission of African and African American Studies and to the ongoing collaboration between the Humanities, Architecture and Urban Design at Washington University.
