Scope of Job:
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), College of Liberal Arts (CLA), Department of Public Affairs and Security Studies (PASS) seeks a senior colleague with the ability to lead the department in developing and growing its programs. We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body for the position of Chair at the Full Professor rank with tenure beginning Fall 2021.

The department is particularly interested in an individual with the vision to build on the existing degree and certificate programs that will capitalize on UTRGV's unique geographical location in the Rio Grande Valley on the US/Mexico border. We seek an individual who can foster and promote successful collaboration across diverse academic fields.

The position is tenured at the Full Professor rank; the ideal candidate would be responsible for directing a department of five full-time faculty members and several adjunct faculty members . The Department includes an in-person Master of Public Affairs (MPA) with three concentrations (public administration, global security, and public policy) offered via ITV simultaneously on the two main campuses. The department also includes an independent accelerated online MPA program and two undergraduate minors—one in public administration and one in global security studies.

Chair Scope: The Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and is responsible for providing vision, leadership, and inclusive excellence for the research, teaching, and service activities of the Department. The Chair supports diversity and inclusion with the faculty in their duties, and advocates for the Department before the College and the University. He or she promotes the program internally and externally, monitors its continued growth and continuously pursues student success at both the graduate and the undergraduate levels. In addition to his or her administrative responsibilities, the Chair continues to pursue research projects and collaborations locally and nationally. This position is a faculty appointment within the department with additional supplemental stipends for chair throughout the fiscal year and offers a competitive salary, excellent benefits, and reduced teaching responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Public Administration, Public Policy, Public Affairs, Political Science, Global Security or closely related discipline. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in leadership, service, research, and teaching, with an established research agenda and a strong publication record in peer-reviewed venues, have tenure at their current institution, and must meet the standards to be a full professor at UTRGV in the department. Five years of administrative experience at the departmental level or for an academic program is required.


Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:


Preferred Qualification:
Experience with online teaching and/or direction of online programs, program development, scheduling, assigning, facilitating, and evaluating the work of faculty and staff. Experience with mentoring developing scholars, initiating, and supervising the faculty promotion and tenure process. Evidence of strong interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills. Knowledge of administering the financial affairs at the department level. Knowledge of current state and federal grant-related regulations and attainment of external funding. History of interdisciplinary collaboration and research. Experience with program evaluation and ongoing curricular revisions based on assessment outcomes; and experience directing recruitment, retention, advising, and timely graduation of students.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length. All UTRGV employees are required to have a criminal background check (CBC). CBCs will be conducted for all candidates invited for an on-campus interview.

test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of
