The Department of Teaching and Leadership in the College of Education at Pittsburg State University seeks applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2021. The department invites energetic, collaborative educators to join an established faculty to partner in mentoring and instructing graduate students to become Licensed Reading Specialists or Classroom Reading Teachers. Successful candidates will be qualified to teach discipline-specific skills, strategies, theories, and best practices which focus on grades preK-12; participate in research, scholarly activities, and provide service and leadership to the department, the college, the university, the community, and the profession.

Licensed Reading Specialists, individuals with university teaching experience, clinical supervision experience, or those who bring diverse perspectives to the University or who have capacity to mentor and advise students who are members of groups that have been historically underrepresented in the institution's student population and in the field of teaching are encouraged to apply.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:

  • Earned doctorate from an accredited institution in reading education or a similar field; ABD will be considered
  • Teaching certification in an area of education for grades preK-12
  • Teaching experience with preK-12 students
  • Evidence of teaching excellence
  • Evidence of commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusivity
  • Evidence of quality instruction for both graduate and undergraduate students
  • Evidence of excellence in collaborative work

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in reading and a doctorate degree in reading or a similar field
  • University teaching experience at both graduate and undergraduate levels
  • Evidence of scholarly and creative achievement
  • Practical experience including formal and informal reading assessment in preK-12 reading
  • Experience in teacher preparation

RESPONSIBILITIES: The position includes, but is not limited to, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in reading as assigned by the Department of Teaching and Leadership; participating in research and scholarly activities; supervising students in clinical settings; providing academic advising to students as assigned; engaging in service to the university and community; and participating in department, college, and university committee work. Course workload would include developmental stages of reading, assessment and identification of struggling readers, research-based strategies for learners, and meeting the International Literacy Association and the International Dyslexia Association standards for literacy instruction. Courses may be delivered through a variety of methods including online, hybrid and face-to-face.

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT:  Full-time, tenure-track, nine academic months and possible summer appointment.  The successful candidate is expected to be officed on campus.  This is not a distance, online position.

RANK AND SALARY: The position is tenure-earning at the rank of Assistant Professor.  Salary is commensurate to rank, experience, and qualifications.
