The School of Design at Pratt Institute seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as Chairperson of the Graduate Communications Design department and build upon the strengths of the existing programs. This position will begin July 2021. Housed together with the Undergraduate Communications Design department in the School of Design, the department is a recognized leader in the field and currently offers an MFA in Communications Design and an MS in Package Design. The Chairperson is responsible for the overall management and future direction of the department's academic programs, in accordance with Pratt's mission and in support of the institution's strategic plan. The Chairperson will assume academic and administrative leadership of the department and will develop programs to complement, enhance and build upon it's graduate prestige and reputation.

Successful candidates will have strong administrative and teaching experience, outstanding organizational skills, and excellent communication skills with an equitable leadership style. This administrative appointment carries a twelve-month per year workload and a three-year contract that may be renewed.
The selected candidate will report to the Dean of the School of Design and work closely with the Undergraduate Communications Design Chair, as well as the dean and other department chairs in the school as we continue to develop inter and transdisciplinary opportunities for students and faculty. The Chairperson will oversee approximately 60 faculty, an Assistant Chair, and an Assistant to the Chair.

Job Responsibilities
  • Supervise and develop the department's curriculum and educational programs
  • Recruit, supervise, evaluate, and develop faculty
  • Recruit and advise students
  • Develop and maintain assessment instruments, including program reviews
  • Oversee the department's budget and allocation of resources, course scheduling and departmental facilities
  • Lead departmental efforts in NASAD and MSCHE accreditation
  • Establish links to professional organizations and leading practitioners in the field
  • Assist the Dean and Institutional Advancement in fundraising and advancing the program's profile
  • Serve on School and Institute committees
  • Carry out special projects as assigned by the Dean
  • Some teaching is supported and encouraged but not required
  • Perform all other related duties as required

Qualifications

Education: Terminal degree in Communications Design or a related field from an accredited institution, domestic or international.

Experience: Candidates should have at least 3-5 years of administrative and teaching experience in higher education and professional or creative practice in Communications Design or a related field. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong administrative and interpersonal skills; a level of inter-cultural competence and ability to work with diverse populations. An understanding of the educational benefits of diversity and a commitment to diversity and inclusion are essential.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with education and experience.
