Advising and Retention Manager
Penn State Schuylkill is seeking an Advising & Retention Manager to lead our academic advising and retention efforts. Housed within the campus' cross-functional Career Development Center, specific responsibilities will include supervising professional advisors and providing guidance to faculty academic advisors while maintaining an advising portfolio, providing expertise in best practices, data analysis, and the scholarship of advising, retention, and student success, and collaborating with a variety of stakeholders across campus to include colleagues within the Career Development Center and across campus in Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, and Student Affairs
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Supervising professional advisors and providing guidance to
faculty academic advisors while maintaining an advising
portfolio
- Providing expertise in best practices, data analysis, and the
scholarship of advising, retention, and student success
- Collaborating with a variety of stakeholders on campus to
include colleagues within the Career Development Center and across
campus in Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, and Student
Affairs
Additional responsibilities will include: - Managing the Advising/ DUS staff by providing leadership to the
staff members, planning and facilitating regularly scheduled staff
meetings, regular personnel reviews and assistance with
professional development, facilitating change when new processes
and policies which impact advising are implemented, managing the
budget and assessment
- Working as an academic advisor with an assigned caseload and
providing walk-in coverage on a shared basis with the other
advising staff members
- Lead the retention efforts of the campus to include the
following specific responsibilities: Collaborate with a variety of
stakeholders on campus to include colleagues within the Career
Development Center and across campus in Academic Affairs,
Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, and others to assess campus
retention efforts and work towards increased student retention.
Serve a lead role in the Retention Action Team and Retention
Committee and develop and update campus retention plan. Oversee and
coordinate summer PaSSS program and other retention
initiatives
- Responsibility in planning, implementation and assessment of
New Student Orientation in collaboration with the office of Student
Affairs and also for ensuring that all new incoming students
including advanced standing students and change of assignment
students get registered for appropriate courses within their
planned program of study and are assigned an academic
advisor
- Additionally, this position is responsible for the oversight of
all Division of Undergraduate Students, Provisional Students, and
non-degree students who would benefit from academic advising
The academic advising staff includes the coordinator and 3 full-time advisors. The advisors and other staff in the Career Development Center assist all Schuylkill students (more than 600 annually), perspective students, faculty and staff on an as needed basis to optimize student success from the beginning of their academic careers through their professional careers. They support faculty advisors through training, mentoring and professional development with the goal of ensuring that all advisors are as accurate and up to date as possible with advising policies and programmatic changes.
This individual serves on campus and college-wide committees and ensures that student retention, advising issues, contributions, concerns and needs are included in plans, programming and decision-making. The position typically requires a Master's degree or higher and 3 years experience. Or a combination of education and experience.
