General Summary/Purpose:

The primary responsibility of this position is to operate and troubleshoot the highly technical, state-of-the art mass cytometer, as it is applied to translational and clinical research studies. Other instrument operations may include multi-parameter laser-based cell sorters and flow cytometers. Successful performance in this role generally requires multiple years of experience, as well as in-depth technical training. This individual will collaborate closely with investigators and numerous laboratories in the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (SKCCC) to design and execute experiments involving mass and flow cytometry using higher-parameter cytometry panels. This individual will also support and maintain several sophisticated flow cytometry devices, including Fluidigm CyTOF, BD LSRII, LSR-Fortessa, and Beckman-Coulter CytoFLEX analysis units. Associated responsibilities include oversight of instrument calibration, routine maintenance, data analysis and billing.

This work requires extensive knowledge of laboratory concepts, practices and procedures, operations, and regulatory requirements - including for the analysis of untested human samples under BSL2/3 conditions. Additionally, this position requires a basic knowledge and operations experience with mass/flow cytometry as it applies to a research laboratory environment. In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, the range of duties includes, but is not limited to: inventory control, writing/editing/implementation of standard procedures (SOPs), purchasing and maintenance of laboratory equipment, monitoring environmental risks and quality control.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides high-level operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of mass cytometer, multi-laser flow sorters and analyzers for the members of the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (SKCCC).
  • Collaborates with the multiple principal investigators and their personnel to design appropriate mass/flow cytometry and sorting studies.
  • Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, practices and methods specifically used in mass cytometry, cell sorting and analysis. Demonstrates expertise in multi-parameter analysis of cells, identification and sorting of cell populations using mass/flow cytometry technology. Certain applications may include physical sorting of sub-cellular components.
  • Develops and implements procedures to accomplish work operations and objectives in support of research activities and to ensure efficient utilization of the core laboratory resources.
  • Exhibits familiarity with applicationsin multiple scientific areas – including apoptosis, gene expression, cytokine expression,cell biochemistry as well as novel Mass/FACS techniques for quantifying activated kinases and phosphatasesindividual cells, simultaneouslywith cell surface phenotyping.
  • Designs, develops and executes research operations within the core. Schedules work, ensures proper maintenance of all equipment and troubleshoots multiple cell phenotyping, sorting and FACS analysis instruments.
  • Achieves a high level of professional/scientific skill and/or knowledge and keeps up with current developmentsand trends in the area of mass/flow cytometry.
  • Provides technical oversight of all instrumentation in the core laboratory. Ensures proper maintenance of all instrumentation. Ensures proper use and safety of equipment.
  • Assists in the design and implementing training programs and provides technical support to users of the core instruments. Trains users in the proper use of the user-based instruments.
  • Monitors use of equipment and ensures that supplies and inventory are maintained. Ensurescompliance with safety standards to maintain a safe environment.
  • Demonstrates good oral and written communication skills and basic knowledge of computer programs such as MS Word and Excel.


    Minimum Qualifications(Required)
    Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
    Four (4) years experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.

    Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *


    Preferred Qualifications
    Bachelor’s degree in Science, Biology, Chemistry or related field preferred
    Four (4) years directly related to mass cytometry or flow cytometry required.


    Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities / Competencies:
    Demonstrated related technical knowledge required. Intermediate knowledge of immunology and cytometry is required.
  • Good verbal and written skills are required, as is a basic knowledge of computer science.
  • Prior experience with CellQuest or DiVa software is helpful but not required.
  • General computer skills, with experience with Microsoft Office.
