The Department of Urology is seeking aClinical Nurseto work under the direct supervision of the Clinical Nurse Supervisor. This position will provide support to the clinical providers, render urologic care to patients, provide patient education, and assist with clinical operations at the Urology Clinic at Green Spring Station, Pavilion III.

The Clinical Nurse ensures a positive patient centered experience by modeling, promoting and cultivating a commitment to customer service as evidenced by minimal waiting, appointment preparations, proper identification and rooming of patients, safe delivery of services. Serves as a resource for support to staff, i.e. patient service coordinators (PSCs), and certified medical assistants (CMAs), environmental monitoring in the clinical areas, promotion and implementation of quality improvement initiatives that are aligned with departmental and organizational safety and operational goals. The Clinical Nurse will work collaboratively with others within the multidisciplinary health care team to optimize patient satisfaction, experience, and outcomes.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides nursing support for the urology clinic.
  • Performs and assist with urologic ancillary exams and procedures, including but not limited to, urodynamic testing, BCG administration, biopsies, cystos, voiding trials, injections, catheter removals/check-ins/insertions, vasectomies, bladder scans, SP tube changes, excisions, aspirations, etc.
  • Practices nursing to deliver safe, therapeutic care, intravesical therapies
  • Practices nursing per clinical protocols and under the nursing scope of practice for the State of Maryland
  • Performs phlebotomy and clinical support integrated within the provider clinic.
  • Serves as a resource for support staff, i.e. CMAs, PSCs, etc.
  • Triages patient calls
  • Provides patient education
  • Assures accurate completion of specimens and required documentation to ensure quality and adherence to JHH policies, protocol requirements, and ICH GCP guidelines.
  • Participates in planning for new and amended protocols.
  • Assists in the planning of protocol–specific activities and identify potential barriers to protocol compliance.

Unit Operations: In close partnership with health care team, assures smooth and efficient patient flow and clinical operation.

  • Assists patients to exam room and prepares patients for examination. Assists patients in wheelchairs and stretchers with transfers to and from exam tables, procedure tables, and scales utilizing proper body mechanics and safety measures. Identifies patients with special needs.
  • Directs patients with medical complaints who call or arrive to the clinic to the patient’s physician and/or emergency room for assistance.
  • Orders, stocks, and maintains exam rooms and clinic areas with standard levels of supplies, medications, linens, nourishments, forms and equipment. Recognizes patient care trends affecting unit supplies and notifies clinic manager.
  • Operates clinical equipment according to equipment procedures including safety and quality control checks. Checks clinic area and rooms for malfunctioning equipment and general maintenance problems on a regular basis. Reports findings to appropriate person or arranges for repairs as required.
  • Ensures that soiled linen, needle containers and potentially infectious waste are appropriately disposed and removed from the clinic and exam area according to the infection control guidelines.
  • Performs related and delegated tasks, which includes requests for prescription refills, taking and relaying messages, directing patient flow and running errands.
  • Works with healthcare team to assure smooth and efficient patient flow and clinical operation. Problem solves obstacles to throughput process and notifies manager and patients of wait time.
  • Assists with front desk duties, including but not limited to filing, scanning, purging records, clearing the fax machine and distributing documents appropriately, and printing EPR notes.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Individual must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline preferred.

Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.

Acceptable completion of the JHH credentialing process is required within two weeks of start date.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in nursing or related discipline preferred.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires successful interpersonal and communication skills with patients, families, physicians, and other health care team members in order to foster optimal quality of outpatient care.
  • Ability to use computer keyboard functions to input and obtain data.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications: Current CPR certification.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to lift minimum weight, 10 lbs. Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
