Job Description Summary

The Career and Academic Advisor is responsible for providing complete organizational information and services to students across a number of disciplines that may include admissions, financial aid, academic advising, career services, international students, and disability services. The Career and Academic Advisor provides professional-level career counseling and/or academic advisement and provides direct student assistance in career development activities. The Career and Academic Advisor is responsible for coordinating internal and external partnerships to enhance services; making referrals for resources to assist in the students’ career and educational success; and serving as the liaison between high schools, students, employers and the college.
The responsibilities of the Academic and Career Advisor include, but are not limited to: facilitating student orientations; guiding students’ career decisions and class selection; tracking the advancement of students and providing case management and assistance for at-risk students; and assisting students with job searches, resume preparation, and placement or transfer.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree and two years’ experience in education or related field.
  2. Master’s degree in education, student personnel, or related field, plus two years’ experience preferred.
  3. Experience making small group presentations.
  4. Experience providing direct service to a diverse population including disadvantaged students and/or students with disabilities.
  5. Experience training and coordinating efforts with faculty and staff for programming and planning activities or services.
  6. Must have supervised personnel a minimum of two years.

  1. Shares the knowledge of the college catalog, curricula, and programs
  2. Provides career, job and transfer articulation information to a diverse population of students.
  3. Provides advising for prospective, new and current students in a variety of formats and locations including peak registration, individual advising sessions, classroom visits and group sessions.
  4. Assists international students in providing comprehensive advising services to F-1 and other non-immigrant students; namely admissions, placement testing/interpretation,
    academic program planning, international academic credential evaluation procedures,
    work authorization, reinstatement, change of visa/tuition status, I-20 extensions, travel
    authorization procedures, and F-I student transfer guidelines.
  5. Conducts SOAR sessions and FYE advisement sessions.
  6. Interprets Accuplacer, Michigan, SAT, ACT, and TOEFL test results and/or identifies the
    proper prerequisites and course sequences for the student.
  7. Remains current and knows how to use Colleague, Owl Link, the email system, and other technologies or software required to guide students through all aspects of advising.
  8. Communicates and updates students throughout the academic year including the benchmarks of 15, 30, 45 and 60 billable hours.
  9. Enforces the completion of the
    developmental sequence once the student begins the process.
  10. Completes Satisfactory Academic Progress ( SAP ) appeal process.
  11. Respond to and manage cases assigned through the Retention Alert System.
  12. Provides guidance to students individually or in group settings regarding career decisions, degree plans, and transfer opportunities.
  13. Identifies skill gaps and advises students on relevant workforce programs to meet their
  14. Assists students with registration and appropriate course selection.
  15. Utilizes a wide range of software and computer systems to track and analyze student progression and retention.
  16. Analyzes student retention data and takes appropriate action to promote student success including case management of at-risk students.
  17. Helps students understand current job markets by researching career options
  18. Facilitating student orientations.

Job Requirements

  1. Must be available to work Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and one late night a week (12 noon to 8:00 pm).
  2. Work schedule subject to change based on the needs of the department.
  3. Must be flexible with respect to work schedule an site location.
  4. Peak registration time. No annual leave granted in January and August.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
  6. As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
