Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for the oversight of animal colonies and specialized experimentation with animals. The Technician will assist in the conduct of research on projects involving immunology, cancer biology, and molecular biology. The position conducts research activities requested by P.I. under supervision. Duties will include: Designs and performs experiments based on P.I.’s goals, general laboratory maintenance, preparation of solutions, sterilization of reagents and apparatus, disposal of hazardous waste. Daily record keeping, analysis of data, preparation of data, and presentation of data. The objectives of this position are to perform experiments in a reproducible and consistent manner on the funded research and to oversee the general functioning of the laboratories, which should lead to high productivity by way of publications and presentations, thereby enabling further extramural support for the lab.

Minimum Hiring Standards

B.S. in Biological Sciences or equivalent experience/training. Prior experience in tissue culture techniques and surgical procedures on animal. An understanding of molecular biology techniques such as PCR, quantitative RT- PCR, Western blotting, etc. Animal research experience is required. Computer and organizational skills are required. Ability to work in a diverse environment.

Preferred Hiring Standards

Willingness to learn new protocols and to assist in new immunological protocols. Experience with animal models of tissue injury and repair is strongly preferred.
