Mission or Goal of Unit

The Department of Family Medicine & Population Health at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine believes in the importance of comprehensive lifetime care for residents throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. This commitment is carried through our medical education, existing and now new residency programs, in which our faculty and local doctors instruct the next generation of family medicine physicians using advanced techniques and hands-on training.

Our goal is for this new program to be a model program for training those dedicated to the serving underserved populations in a variety of settings and advancing family physicians’ abilities to address health disparities and inequities in addition to providing highest quality clinical care. The program will include rotations at both the VCU Community Memorial Hospital and VCU’s flagship academic medical center. The program will focus on broad-spectrum training and common procedures important in caring for underserved populations.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

VCU’s Department of Family Medicine and Population Health is in the process of creating a new rural training track family medicine residency focused on serving the underserved in the urban population in Richmond, VA, in the rural area of South Hill, VA, and internationally. As a founding core faculty member and the Associate Program Director, this position will be responsible for helping to build this new residency program from the ground up and critical to its success in the future.

Position Responsibilities

As a founding core faculty member and the Associate Program Director, you will be responsible for helping to build this program from the ground up! We anticipate having residents in post no later than July 1, 2023. Prior to that time the Associate Program Director will be responsible for working with the Program Director to design curriculum, prepare the ACGME application, help conduct initial recruiting for clinical faculty and residents, while maintaining time for clinical practice. As core faculty and Associate Program Director, once the residents arrive, we anticipate faculty will spend a majority of time on clinical precepting, direct resident and medical student education in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, and educational administration. The remaining time will be devoted to your own direct clinical practice. This position will be based on the MCV Campus of VCU Health in Richmond, VA.

Required Qualifications

• BC/BE in Family Medicine
• Able to obtain license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Past experience in providing direct patient care to underserved populations across multiple settings
• Willing and able to care for patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting
• Passion for family medicine education
• Dedication to serving underserved populations
• Commitment to diversity and inclusion
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
• Direct experience in family medicine education at the medical student and/or resident level

Preferred Qualifications

Confidence and competence in at least one of the following areas:
-primary care management of HIV
-primary care management of Hepatitis C
-care of pregnant women including antenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum care
-substance abuse treatment with medically-assisted therapy (must have or be willing to obtain suboxone waiver)
-specialized procedural training in emergency, inpatient and outpatient settings
-primary care ultrasound
Experience teaching, coaching, and/or mentoring adult learners
