About the Opportunity:
The Center on Crime and Community Resilience (CCR) at Northeastern University seeks a skilled associate director to oversee the Center's research and policy efforts in California, as well as provide strategic guidance and assistance to other CCR projects.

The CCR has worked on nationally (and internationally) recognized projects related to violence prevention, taking a research approach to addressing issues that communities raise up as the most important challenges they face. Research shows that many communities suffer from problems that cause sharp inequalities of opportunity: we have strong evidence that where individuals grow up directly influences their income, education, and likelihood of being involved in the criminal justice system, regardless of factors such as family history.

We believe that better policies can change the dynamics of communities and improve the prospects of vulnerable people in society. Unfortunately, many policymakers believe they have little choice but to stick with "tried and true" approaches that have failed to make significant progress, or have harsh negative consequences. Research is one way to convincingly demonstrate the potential of new ideas.

CCR projects often pursue a “triple bottom line”—our successful projects are ones that reduce violence that is affecting communities, reducing incarceration, and lessening the burden of policing on communities by generating fewer and more just interactions between police and community members. As many of our projects directly work with the criminal justice system to achieve these goals, we need to be comfortable both holding the priorities of the communities we serve at the center of our work while also being able to work productively with police and other groups.

Responsibilities:
The main responsibility of the Associate Director will be overseeing all aspects of CCR's ongoing efforts in California. Current projects are in Bakersfield, Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco and Stockton. All of these projects involve working closely with government and community partners, including mayor's offices, police departments, other law enforcement agencies, and social service providers and other nonprofits. The Associate Director will work closely with the CCR's Director and Executive Director to set strategy for all work being done in California and to coordinate the activity of all partner organizations working on California Projects, as well as manage the on-the-ground aspects of planning, implementation, and evaluation of California-based projects. Major projects include:

  • Assisting in the implementation of and evaluating innovative violence prevention programs in close collaboration with allied groups such at the California Partnership for Safe Communities and the Violence Prevention Research Program at UC Davis.

  • Investigating sources of illegal guns in California and common pathways of transfer, as well as exploring means of transfer. This could include research on emerging markets for illegal guns.

  • Generating new evidence on what types of violence prevention efforts have been most successful, including looking at efforts done in particular cities to see what has been effective in different circumstances as well as undertaking prospective studies of new programs to guide policymaking efforts.

    The Associate Director will also manage relations with California-based funders and develop new project opportunities in the state. In addition, the Associate Director may assist the CCR on strategy and execution of any of the Center's other major projects, including major violence prevention efforts in cities such as Baltimore.

    This is a full time position based in California and will report to the Executive Director of the CCR. This is a term-limited position funded by grant support and will last for three years, until 9/30/2023, with a possibility of extension.

    Qualifications:
    Education: A Master's degree in Public Policy, Public Affairs, or a similar field with significant knowledge and background related to public policy around crime, violence and criminal justice issues.
    Experience: 10 years of experience working with government and non-profit organizations on projects related to violence prevention other urban policy. Experience working directly with mayoral offices with police departments. Experience working on projects related to evaluation.
    Skills: A deep understanding of how government services function. Strong professional written and verbal proficiency in English and an understanding of how to communicate policy lessons from technical academic research in ways that policymakers and practitioners understand.
    Organization: The ability to think strategically, handle multiple projects at once, meet deadlines, and effectively manage your time.
