Open-Rank Professor, Health Communication at the intersection of race and gender
The Department of Communication in collaboration with the Program in African and African American Studies and the Program in Women and Gender Studies at George Mason University seeks a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor or a tenured Associate or Full Professor of Health Communication, with a specialty at the intersection of gender and African/African-American health, for an August 2021 appointment. Scholarly specialization in Black Women’s Health is strongly preferred. The person will have primary appointment within the Department of Communication and formal affiliations in the African and African American Studies program, and the Mason Women and Gender Studies Program. The tenure line for the person will reside in the Department of Communication.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Communication or closely related area, a record of research, an ongoing research agenda, a record of teaching excellence, a commitment to department and university service, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Specific areas of research should be consistent with departmental emphases in health, strategic, and science communication, must include health communication at the intersection of race and gender, specializing in African and/or African-American health. A scholarly specialization in Black women’s health is preferred; scholarship may also include other traditional areas of communication studies.
About the position:
This position is a part of the College of Humanities and Social Science’s Inclusive Excellence diversity cluster hire initiative designed to create a cohort of faculty across departments whose scholarship focuses on issues related to inequalities; underrepresented regions and languages of the world; underserved, vulnerable populations; race, racism, and antiracism; and intersectional approaches to the study of difference, diversity, discrimination, and social justice. This cohort will contribute to interdisciplinary programs and enhance the mentorship of a majority-minority student population.
About the Communication Department
Mason’s Communication Department has a diverse and collegial faculty committed to excellence, innovation community and public service, inclusion, and social equity. All department faculty participate in the life of our community, including career fairs, faculty functions, recruiting sessions and other events. We offer a broad undergraduate program with more than 500 majors; five minor programs; a large M.A. program including strategic, health, and science communication specialties; and a focused Ph.D. program emphasizing health, strategic, and science communication.
The department also offers a graduate certificate in science communication. We enjoy robust student diversity in all our academic programs, serving students who bring a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds to our classrooms. Additionally, the department supports several co-curricular activities, including debate, forensics, Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Society for Professional Journalists, and a comprehensive student media organization (newspaper, radio, television, sports announcing, magazine and journal editing, etc.).
The research life of the department includes both undergraduate and graduate research, and is reflected in the activities and outreach of its faculty, including those of the Center for Health and Risk Communication, the Center for Climate Change Communication, the Center for Media and Public Affairs, and the Character Assassination and Reputation Politics research lab.
About the African and African American Studies
The Mason African and African American Studies program offers students a unique opportunity to better understand the experiences of people of African descent throughout the African Diaspora—from the African continent to the Americas, the Caribbean, and Europe. Through coursework in disciplines like philosophy, history, religion, literature, art and more, the African and African American Studies program aims to vitalize the landscape of historical thinking. It encourages students to critically examine and better appreciate the global struggle for justice.
The program offers a minor and access to the resources of the Paul Robeson Room. These connect them to a research-minded faculty using technology to reflect on history, build community outreach programs, and channel its students to jobs, internships, and other study programs. Through undergraduate and graduate coursework in disciplines like communication, philosophy, history, religion, literature, art and more, the African and African American Studies program aims to vitalize the landscape of historical thinking. It encourages students to critically examine and better appreciate the global struggle for justice.
About the Women and Gender Studies
The Women and Gender Studies program is based on an integrated, co-curricular model, serving as both an academic unit in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and as a student affairs unit in University Life. The Program offers a graduate MA concentration and certificate in women and gender studies, an undergraduate major and minor, and an interdisciplinary, undergraduate minor in LGBTQ studies.
A campus leader in promoting interdisciplinarity, the Women and Gender Studies Program facilitates collaborations with a broad range of disciplines across the humanities, arts, and social sciences. Just as crucial to our mission is our work in supporting the well-being, development, and social engagement of students through our work with University Life and the many opportunities for programmed and spontaneous encounters among students, faculty, and staff in the Women and Gender Studies Center, a dedicated space for our program located at the heart of the university.
Responsibilities of the position include developing a research program, contributing to the teaching needs of the department and programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels, mentoring students, and service to the department and programs commensurate with rank.
- Ph.D in communication or closely related discipline;
- Demonstrated research program in health communication with a specialization at the intersection of race and gender;
- Research focus on African and/or African-American health and gender;
- Record of teaching excellence;
- Commitment and interest in teaching courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
- Scholarly specialization in Black women’s health;
- Demonstrated interest in developing successful funded interdisciplinary research collaborations;
- Commitment to service to the department, school and discipline;
- Experience in both graduate and undergraduate teaching/mentoring.
