Assistant Professor of English (9-mo-TT)

Samford University’s Howard College of Arts and Sciences invites individuals interested in serving in a Christian university environment to apply for a position as Assistant Professor of English, beginning August 2021.  This tenure-track, 9-month faculty position carries a teaching load of three four-credit courses per semester, as well as expectations for active research and service agendas. Teaching will include introductory and upper-level courses in English and American literatures and courses in general education and core curriculum programs, which cover first-year writing and the history of ideas. A robust and realistic scholarly agenda is expected, as is service to department, college, university, and community initiatives.

Qualifiied candidates will hold a Ph.D. in English from an institution accredited by HLC, MSCHE, NECHE, NWCCU, SACSCOC or WSCUC at the time of appointment. The English Department seeks a scholar of American literature with a specialization in the nineteenth century. Applicants with knowledge of film studies are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will have demonstrated excellence in teaching and the capacity to produce peer-reviewed scholarship. They must be committed to teaching, student development and mentorship, and collegial collaboration.

English studies has been a central focus of Samford University since the university’s founding in 1841, when the original institution was called the Howard College of English and Classical Studies. Fourteen faculty members serve approximately eighty majors in a traditional BA program of writing and literary study, in optional concentrations in Creative Writing and Film, and in minors in English, Film and Video Studies, and Writing.
