GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: 

Springfield Technical Community College is seeking an experienced academic leader with a strong, student-centered vision to head the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) division.  The Dean is responsible for a range of duties and will lead a comprehensive and integrated STEM approach across multiple programs and disciplines.  She/he will support excellence in instruction, program development, faculty development, and student learning.  In a changing and dynamic higher education environment, STCC seeks an individual who can navigate systematic approaches to teaching and learning; comfort in utilizing research and data for evidence-based decision-making and planning; appreciation for online and hybrid pedagogy; and experience building through program review.

Working with and under the supervision of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, this dean is responsible for the overall leadership of the School, including supervision of all full and part-time faculty, as well as for the daily and long-term operation of all the courses, programs, and initiatives that focus particularly on retention and graduation. The Dean will implement and champion innovative pedagogy, and will embrace management practices and processes which maximize personnel skill sets. Supportive resources are leveraged to achieve STEM goals, which align with the College's goals, including equity considerations specific to students of color.  With the diverse population of the Greater Springfield region, this Dean will demonstrate a strong commitment to the value of recruiting students, faculty and staff that reflect the community. This Dean works together with faculty and staff to create an atmosphere of trust and respect in which all can succeed.

Job responsibilities include, but not limited to: 

  • Recruits, hires, supports and supervises diverse faculty and staff for the division.
  • In partnership with the Vice President of Academic Affairs, and as a facilitator with Department Chairpersons/Curriculum Coordinators and Faculty, develop and move forward goals, initiatives, and curricula consistent with the College's mission statement, which includes responding to economic and industry needs.
  • Collaborates with faculty, other deans and college staff on initiatives to increase diverse student enrollment, with a particular focus on women, African American, and Hispanic student persistence.
  • Partners with other academic schools to create sustainable initiatives focusing on student success, also provides proactive collaboration with area high schools as well as area employers, organizations and key college partners.
  • Participate in re-accreditation and strategic planning processes for the College
  • Key partnering with Student Affairs specific to advising, appeals and complaints; and participation on College committees and initiatives
  • Utilize data to improve program performance and student learning outcomes while advancing a culture of continuous improvement

Management

  • Works with department chairs and curriculum coordinators in implementing current curricula and best practices.
  • Partners with Vice President of Academic Affairs to facilitate comprehensive program review, which includes departmental assessment and goal setting
  • Ensures effective functioning of advisory committees for each academic department and degree offering
  • Provides significant contributions to institution accreditation and program accreditation efforts
  • Submits promptly and in proper form all reports and requests as set forth by the Vice President of Academic Affairs; serves as a key budget manager within Academic Affairs 
  • Attend all meetings as required.
  • Annually ensures that departments provide input on the appointment of a department chairperson in accordance with procedures specified in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Conducts School/department head meetings as required.
  • Articulates with other deans on personnel and academic matters of mutual concern.
  • Promote the use of current and emerging instructional methodologies, including technology and differentiated modes of instructional delivery
  • Ensure student learning outcomes assessment is comprehensive and integrated, to include faculty partnering and proactive implementation of strategies to improve student success and completion

Curriculum:

  • Comprehensively, ensures faculty utilize course projects, service learning/embedded internships, and other high-impact practices in all degree programs to support student success
  • Assumes the administrative responsibility for planning with respect to School curricular matters and 2-5 year curriculum goals and articulation of same with School faculty and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
  • Determines, in consultation with program chairs, course offerings and teaching assignments by semester (Master Schedule).
  • Responsible for ensuring an effective course selection and advisement process during scheduled registration periods related to School courses/programs.
  • Lead and managing an array of academic programs including program review and curricular development and enhancement
  • Innovate academic programs through the use of technology to deliver, enhance, and assess learning and implement best practices in curriculum planning, management and instruction that supports new pedagogies.

Personnel:

  • Determines with School personnel and justifies the need for all new positions (full- and part-time) in the School and submits recommendations to the Vice President.
  • Prepares evaluations of School faculty and staff as specified in applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements and proactively recommends re-appointments, non-reappointments, program/professional advancement, and tenure/multiple-year contracts to the Vice President.
  • Makes recommendations to Vice President on all categories of leaves (i.e., medical, maternity, personal, educational and sabbatical)
  • Mediates faculty/student grievances within the School when necessary based on contract provisions, and in consultation with the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
  • Experience in the supervision of faculty and in managing change while setting expectations, recognizing strong performance, addressing performance issues, and providing constructive feedback, coaching and developmental opportunities

Facilities:

  • Manages classrooms and labs, with assistance from College faculty and staff, and communicates to appropriate personnel any updates and repairs needed for all classrooms used by STEM faculty.
  • Forwards recommendations on department instructional space needs to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and serves as a key collaborator with facilities personnel.
  • Ensures utilization and proper maintenance of specialized learning equipment and materials.

Fiscal:

  • Prepares annual budget for the division and forwards this to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Support diversity and address structural inequities in key student outcomes
  • As needed, draft and write grant proposals
  • Planning and budget management; monitoring articulation agreements
  • Service to include community engagement and key liaison efforts with community-based organizations, agencies, institutions, and other essential partnerships

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervises, either directly or through his/her subordinates the activities and performance of all Lab Assistants, Directors, full-time Faculty, part-time Faculty, Clerical staff and Program Coordinators and others as assigned. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with STCC's policies, the respective collective bargaining agreement, if appropriate and all federal and state applicable laws, regulations and statutes. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, supervising, and mentoring tenured and tenure-track faculty, adjunct instructors, as well as full and part-time administrative and professional staff; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 Requirements:

  • Master's Degree; doctorate preferred from an accredited institution.
  • Six (6) years of college-level experience in curriculum development, assessment, and department administration.
  • Teaching experience at an accredited institution of higher education, preferably a community college.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of higher education principles, practices, assessment, curriculum development and procedures.
  • Experience with student learning assessment; experience with multiple learning management systems
  • Strong analytical thinker, and affable planner and facilitator, able to synthesize and integrate information, to easily share information ranging from the "big picture" to technical details, and with extensive data visualization and organizational skills
  • Interpersonal skills with college personnel, a diverse student population, community organizations, and other agencies.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
