Department Summary

The San José State University Department of Design seeks candidates for a full -time tenure track faculty position at the intersection of interior design and emerging technologies. The appointment will be made at the level of Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date is August 2021.

The Department of Design is committed to design, research, and scholarship at the highest level. The Department is centered around creative technologies and we are looking for faculty who are seeking to use technology in adaptive, inclusive, poetic, collaborative and experimental ways. We are also socially responsible, we strive to make design accessible and equitable, and we have a culturally engaged vision of design across our programs. This position will be an excellent opportunity for designers interested in launching a career at an institution that is a national leader in graduating historically underserved students. SJSU has achieved both HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution) and AANAPISI (Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution) status. We rank third nationally in increasing student upward mobility. The department offers four professional degrees, and is organized around five discipline groups: Interior Design, Industrial Design, Interaction Design, Graphic Design and Animation. Our faculty include designers, architects, artists, and historians who are committed to excellence, and collaboration extensively across the Department, College, University, Silicon Valley and beyond.

Given this context, the Department of Design seeks outstanding candidates with a talent and ability in the production and teaching of interior design with salient knowledge in at least one of the following fields:

  • Robotics
  • Augmented-reality and virtual-reality systems
  • Interaction systems and programmable surfaces that include technologies such as sensors and actuators
  • Computation, scripting, and creative coding
  • Fabrication using computer numerically controlled (CNC) equipment

As our physical experiences are increasingly mediated by digital activity, designing our built environment will be as much about designing the virtual and interactive experiences that happen in that space. Because emerging technologies are becoming ubiquitous in our everyday lives we are also interested in the ethics and politics, and social complexity of how these technologies are used. Ideal candidates should be asking questions about how such advances either contribute to or mitigate the widening gap between those who have access to such technologies and those who do not.

Candidates must also demonstrate potential to teach at the intersection of design, technology and culture through studios, workshops and/or seminars to a large undergraduate population from a diversity of backgrounds. Candidates must be willing to engage across the various disciplines within the design department, and possibly with other departments within the University because we believe that such collaborations create a charged atmosphere for study and a critical edge for research, we seek candidates with an ability to thrive within this context.

Required Qualifications

  • A master’s degree or above in interior design, design, architecture, computational design or other related field.
  • Candidates must have a body of creative projects, and /or research work that show promise and significance to the field of interior design, architecture or experience design.
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of two years teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

Other Responsibilities
