The School of Art + Art History in the College of the Arts seeks an Assistant Professor in Drawing in the Expanded Field. The successful candidate will demonstrate a clear commitment to drawing as an expanded practice, possessing a broad knowledge of the field (material, technique, form and content); have the ability to engage our students with contemporary, historical and conceptual issues; teach various approaches to drawing from figurative to conceptual; and interface between painting, printmaking and interdisciplinary practices.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach a 2-2 load of drawing courses from observational to conceptual at the undergraduate and graduate level and potentially other courses appropriate to the candidate’s expertise
  • Supervise graduate committees and independent study students
  • Conduct research appropriate to the discipline

SCHOOL OF ART + ART HISTORY: Organized within the College of the Arts, the School of Art + Art History nurtures a culture of critical inquiry in our scholarly and creative work. Our educational mission is to empower each student with knowledge, skills, and insight to engage thoughtfully with our changing world. The SA+AH believes that art, design, and scholarship are critical to our local, university, regional, national, and international communities. We pursue positive transformation and impact through socially engaged, local and global education, research, and creative works. Our community asks challenging questions, takes risks, and strives for excellence through an interdisciplinary, inclusive, and often collaborative practice. School of Art + Art History faculty publish, curate, and exhibit widely and internationally. THE COLLEGE OF THE ARTS: The College of the Arts fosters creative activity, scholarly and artistic excellence, and innovation across disciplines. Minimum Qualifications:
  • Terminal graduate degree (MFA or equivalent) in Drawing, Painting, or related field
  • Relevant teaching or instructional experience beyond graduate teaching assistantships
  • Active studio practice that includes drawing
  • Evidence of emerging or established recognition in the field
  • Evidence of success in promoting an environment that advances diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • A critical approach to the legacies, histories and theories of art and art practices
  • Strong organizational, management and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications :
  • Distinctive vision and pedagogical approach based in the field of drawing
  • Successful educator and committed studio artist with evidence of an active exhibition or publication record and a demonstrated commitment to creative activity
  • Evidence of a commitment to innovative and cross-disciplinary education
  • Capacity to advance interdisciplinary collaborations in teaching and research
  • Teaching experience beyond graduate assistantship at the university level
