The Senior Director of Development for the Department of Neurosurgery is responsible for leading and implementing a broad range of fundraising activities, focused primarily on acquiring major/principal gifts for the College of Medicine’s Department of Neurosurgery and affiliated specialties. Reporting to Senior Associate Vice President & Chief Advancement Officer, he or she will serve as a member of the leadership team that helps lead fundraising programs that will unite stakeholders behind a vision for philanthropy in UF Health. This position will manage a high-level portfolio of leadership and principal gift prospects ($3M-$5M+), and will manage his/her team and inspire a culture of high performance, collegiality and professionalism throughout the organization.
Primary responsibilities include the following:
Strategic Campaign Initiatives
- Develop UF Health fundraising strategies and operational plans to increase philanthropy, engage constituents, and exceed annual fundraising goals.
- Collaborate with UF Advancement Talent Management, UF, and UF Health human resources to perform organizational structure reviews and optimize staff performance to successfully achieve fundraising goals and prepare for the upcoming campaign.
- Work in conjunction with the CDO to evaluate development personnel, strategic or operational plans, and individual metrics and goals.
- Provide direction, strategic planning, leadership, and counsel on matters relating to fundraising and operations.
- Ensure accountability and oversee staffing, including establishing goals in alignment with unit objectives, and develop and implement appropriate metrics.
- Provide oversight for key development leaders reviewing cultivation/solicitation strategies and increasing the effectiveness of all development activities.
- Assist in setting UFA’s fundraising goals and overall vision as it relates to UF Health.
- Build relationships with key university stakeholders, including Deans and University of Florida Foundation and Alumni Association board volunteers to identify institutional priorities.
- Work with administration, faculty and key volunteer groups to disseminate development needs and university priorities and consolidate development efforts.
- Budget resources for best results in fundraising and planning activities involving volunteers, faculty and administration.
- Provide coaching and mentoring for HSC development leaders on strategic plans, business plans, campaign planning and development activities that focus on internal and external partnerships.
- Organize, plan and implement volunteer leadership councils to ensure consistent, high quality engagement of volunteers that lead to campaign gifts.
Grateful Patient Program
- Oversee the creation, implementation, and management of the UF Health Grateful Patient Program to operationalize a program that build pipeline of grateful patient prospects and revenue, engages clinicians, administrators, volunteers and others in the grateful patient process, and assist in the creation of a culture of gratitude.
- Drive the implementation with a focus on a set of key performance indicators, such as, number of educated clinicians, number of engaged clinicians, number of grateful patient referrals, number of visits by gift officers, number of qualified prospects, number of proposals, value of proposals, number of closed gifts, and value of closed gifts, along with other key measures.
- Provide strategic oversite for patient engagement opportunities, including panels, lectures, lab tours and other opportunities to engage grateful patients in a broad manner across the health system.
- Develop speaking programs for panels including working with physicians on presentation skills for audiences with little to no scientific background.
- In partnership with communications, drive online engagement strategy through identification of patient giving stories and other social media engagement strategies.
- Devise strategies to engage grateful patients and inspire them to get involved.
- Coordinate the training and educational initiatives of the program across the UF Health.
- Collaborate with the donor experience team and medical development leadership to design and implement a best-in-class stewardship program for grateful patient donors.
- Collaborate with Medical Development leadership and others to develop materials for the grateful patient fundraising program, especially for increasing the visibility of the program.
- Design clinician recognition programs to highlight the success of clinicians working in the program.
- Partnering with College-based development teams, direct the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects and donors ($3M-$5M+).
- Partner with central Advancement teams, including Principal Gifts, in managing leadership gift prospects and donors with multi-college interests.
- Collaborate with faculty and other internal/external partners to identify, cultivate, and solicit individual and corporate prospects for UF Health and to build health-based efforts for principal gift fundraising.
- Serve as advisor to the Deans and faculty of the Colleges on fundraising matters and coordinate development activities between the Colleges and UF Advancement.
- Oversee plans for campaign readiness and ensure all campaign goals are achieved, in alignment with the strategic priorities of the College of Medicine and UF Advancement.
- Budget resources for best results in fundraising and planning activities involving volunteers, prospects, faculty and administration. Coordinate daily office routing, such as solicitation letters and responses to letters received from various constituents of the Colleges.
- Partner with physicians, researchers, administrators and volunteers in identifying and cultivating prospects and in presenting needs and priorities effectively in written and oral communications.
- Build and manage relationships, utilizing a strategic moves management approach to yield maximum philanthropic support in a timely fashion.
- Develop and present concept papers and gift proposals, and acknowledge and recognize gifts in ways that are meaningful to donors and appropriate to the vision, mission, and values of UF Health.
- Evaluate and analyze programs using established attributes and metrics to make recommendations for change as necessary.
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
Master's degree in appropriate area of specialization and six years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor's degree in appropriate areas of specialization and eight years of experience.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A proven strategic leader with a history of successful higher education program leadership in alumni relations, development, or marketing/communications.
- Seven to ten years of major gift fundraising experience with documented success in cultivating and soliciting major gifts of $100,000 and above from individual and corporate prospects with campaign experience.
- Prior experience in an academic medical center, enthusiasm for fundraising in a comprehensive research university, and the desire to work collegially within a goal-oriented fundraising organization.
- Knowledge of fundraising principles, methods, and standards.
- Expertise in developing solicitation strategies.
- The ability to work strategically, develop and implement constituency programs and activities, along with a talent for motivating volunteers.
- Ability to work collaboratively and a team player.
- Competency in problem solving.
- Must be an outstanding communicator and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills; interpersonal skills; and the ability to work collegially and interact effectively with a diverse constituency.
- An appreciation for and support of diversity in the workplace in all its forms; proven success working with stakeholders; excellent strategic planning and project management skills; experience in a data-driven environment; organizational skills; and the ability to lead, influence and motivate others are required.
- Working knowledge in these areas: Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, internet browsers, preferably Internet Explorer, E-mail. Working knowledge of a donor database, contact management and tracking system.
- The ability and willingness to travel. A valid driver license and good driving record are essential.*
