Job Summary

The Bower School of Music and the Arts at Florida Gulf Coast University seeks an
exceptional scholar and pedagogue for a full-time, nine-month, multi-year renewable
appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 7, 2021. The Bower
School of Music invites applicants who can contribute a unique perspective to the music
theory area and provide excellent teaching that fosters and promotes theory and
musicianship skills relevant to the needs of twenty-first century musicians.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach the core undergraduate music theory
and aural skills curriculum; teach courses aligned with their area(s) of research/creative
specialty; have a strong commitment to pedagogy and a willingness to contribute to
ongoing curricular dialogue at the course and program level; pursue and maintain a high
level of scholarly research and creative activity (including, but not limited to, presentation,
publication, and performance); engage in service opportunities to the University and
community; participate in program and departmental meetings. Candidates who can
provide meaningful contributions to other academic areas (e.g. Music Education, Music
Performance, or Music Therapy) as required by the curriculum or assigned by the Director
are strongly encouraged to apply. Special consideration will be given to applicants who
are members of diversity groups that have been historically underrepresented in faculty
positions in higher education.

Florida Gulf Coast University is a comprehensive university dedicated to quality

resulting in improved student learning; produce peer reviewed scholarship appropriate to
the discipline; and provide service to the College, University, and Community. Ranked
faculty typically teach three courses each fall and spring semester, with additional summer
teaching contracts available on a limited basis. Teaching assignments may be on the main
campus or at off-campus sites within our region.

Job Description

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Plans and teaches courses in assigned course.
  • Prepares syllabi, instruction materials, coordinates lectures, tests, and evaluates.
  • Maintains highest possible standards of classroom instruction.
  • Keeps abreast of new information and developments in field of instruction.
  • Actively serves on university committees.
  • Actively participates in institutional meetings.
  • Maintains professional skills through regular professional development, and other activities appropriate to higher education faculty.
  • Assists with the development of curriculum.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.


Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in music, completed by start of appointment
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly/creative achievement through presentation,
  • publication, and/or performance commensurate with career stage
  • Demonstrated experience with pedagogy at the college/university level
  • Commitment to collegial and collaborative engagement with colleagues to support an increasingly diverse, multicultural student population.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • College/University teaching experience beyond the graduate assistant level
  • Experience teaching core undergraduate music theory and aural skills curricula
  • Demonstrated excellence in music theory and aural skills pedagogy, innovative course development, novel uses of technology in the classroom, and creative approaches to teaching
  • Secondary area(s) of specialty complementary to existing BSMA faculty specialties
  • Demonstrated experience with learning management systems and online curriculum delivery
  • Demonstrated interest in and engagement with current topics in the field of music theory
  • Research specialty and/or teaching expertise in popular music, jazz, and/or non-
  • Western music and music theory
  • Experience advising music majors and minors


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience or commitment to the use of technology in distance learning & university teaching. Interest in collaborating both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction resulting in improved student learning. Must value continued scholarship and service to the school and university. Ability to contribute effectively and collegially to a positive, dynamic, and inclusive learning environment that nurtures student creativity.
