The African American Studies Program at the University of Houston is soliciting applications for its Visiting Scholars Initiative for the 2020-2021 academic year. Applications are sought from scholars in the academic disciplines of: African American Studies; social sciences; and the humanities. Applicant's doctoral degrees must be conferred by May 2021.

The Visiting Scholars Initiative is designed to generate research about African American phenomena and attract scholars who may be interested in assuming a tenure-track position at the University of Houston, subsequent to their residential visiting appointments. The University of Houston, with one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation, seeks to recruit and retain a diverse community of scholars. Research projects with emphasis on the Africana experience are strongly encouraged.

The Visiting Scholar will receive a salary appropriate to rank and will be provided administrative support. Scholars are required to teach one three-credit hour class in African American Studies, during the 2021-2022 academic year. Additionally, the Visiting Scholar will be required to be in residence at the University of Houston for the academic year of 2021-2022. Additionally, Visiting Scholars are required to make two presentations concerning their research projects. The African American Studies Program will provide assistance to Visiting Scholars, concerning interest in advancing their projects to publication. Equally important, Visiting Scholars must acknowledge support of AAS and UH in any publications that result from their appointment at University of Houston.

  1. an updated curriculum vitae;
  2. a two-page description of the proposed research project;
  3. names and contact information for three references; and
  4. a syllabus of the undergraduate course to be taught during the 2021-2022 academic year.

Qualifications :

Ph.D. in African American Studies preferred or Ph.D. in a Social Science and Humanities discipline.
