Position Description

Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit university, seeks to hire a PhD in English or Rhetoric and Composition to act as the inaugural director of Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC), a position that will comprise 50% of the position description. The other 50% will constitute a tenured professorial appointment in the Department of English. This individual will teach two courses a year for the Department of English and be responsible for:

  • initiating, developing and maintaining a WAC program as part of the university’s new undergraduate University Core Curriculum
  • working within the University Undergraduate Core Committee to review interdisciplinary course proposals for writing intensive courses and organize assessment
  • training and providing resources for instructors and faculty members developing and teaching writing intensive courses (in collaboration with the Reinert Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning)
  • ensuring broad commitment to employing a racial equity lens to develop and evaluate writing across colleges, schools and disciplines
  • coordinating with SLU’s University Writing Services to develop best practices for writing intensive course support
The successful candidate will have a primary emphasis in Rhetoric and Composition with an interest and/or specialization in WAC/WID. Experience in administration and institutional expertise is expected.

Successful candidates will have secondary specializations in areas that meet extant curricular needs in the Department of English:

  • Minority Rhetoric
  • Cultural Rhetorics
  • Writing Center Pedagogy
  • Technical and Professional Communication
The WAC program is a key component of Saint Louis University’s new undergraduate University Core Curriculum in that all undergraduate students at SLU must complete one writing intensive course beyond first-year writing. This core component is part of the University Core’s four-course Eloquentia Perfecta sequence, which includes written and visual communication; oral and visual communication; creative expression; and one writing intensive course.

 

Position Duties

(50%) Administration (see above)

(30%) Research:

  • Publication of monographs and articles in refereed journals
  • Community outreach initiatives in keeping with the University’s commitment to racial equity and social justice
  • Delivery of papers at regional, national, and international conferences and meetings
(20%) Teaching:

  • Instruction in undergraduate and graduate courses across the English department curriculum
  • Mentoring undergraduate students and graduate students, and serving on graduate committees
 

Minimum/Required Qualifications

Required

  • Ph.D. in English or Rhetoric and Composition or a related field
  • Evidence of administrative success in institutional or organizational capacities
  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diverse, equitable, and inclusive practices, policies, and programs
  • Evidence of high-impact undergraduate teaching and curricular development
  • Evidence of an established research agenda
Preferred

  • Administrative experience designing pedagogical workshops and/or training sessions for faculty, graduate teaching assistants, and instructors
  • Record of success in curricular development and implementation in undergraduate and graduate rhetoric and writing courses
  • Experience mentoring faculty and graduate students
  • Expertise in the use of technology in writing pedagogy
  • Expertise in teaching writing center pedagogy
