General Summary/Purpose:

Johns Hopkins University has an immediate need for a Software Engineer to join our Library Applications team, supporting commercial, open source, and locally developed systems and online services.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

    Provide technical and strategic product management for core library systems Full-stack development and product life-cycle management for Blacklight Ruby-on-Rails open-source discovery system and Database List application built on FOLIO framework and deployed in containers on AWS Manage locally hosted vendor systems, including EZproxy and SFX, including coordinating server resources with the systems operations team, writing and scheduling cron jobs, and improving features and functionality for patrons and library staff Orchestrate exchange and transformations of large amounts of complex data, while ensuring data security, for systems integrations, reporting, and search engine tuning Automate system configuration, primarily using Ansible, and coordinate version upgrades and functional releases Contribute at a high level to strategic planning for library systems, including project scope definition, functional requirements analysis, technology evaluation, systems architecture design, risk assessment, and “build vs. buy” determinations Serve as liaison between library staff and vendors to ensure system configurations meet operational requirements and staff procedures align with best practices Quickly resolve systems security issues and functional problems reported by library staff and patrons

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

    Bachelor’s degree Five years of related work experience with library computer systems and applications. (Additional experience may substitute for education and additional education may substitute for experience. 30 undergraduate degree credits or 18 graduate degree credits = 1 year of experience) Strong coding skills in Ruby-on-Rails or similar MVC framework, as well as proficiency in other common programming or scripting languages, such as Python, Java, and Bash
    Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and creatively in a team, following agile task management practices and Gitflow approach to version control Familiarity with Docker or Linux containers Strong verbal and written communications skills for both technical and non-technical audiences

The software engineer will have primary responsibility for these vendor-hosted and locally hosted systems, in collaboration with systems operations team and front-end developer:

  • Blacklight discovery system – locally hosted
  • Solr search engine – locally hosted
  • Ares course reserves – vendor hosted
  • ILLiad inter-library loan management – vendor hosted
  • Aeon special collections management – vendor hosted
  • SFX resource linker with Umlaut open source front end – locally hosted
  • EZproxy – locally hosted
  • Database List – locally developed on the FOLIO platform, hosted on AWS
  • Amazon Elastic Search

The software engineer will have backup responsibility for these additional systems:

  • Horizon Integrated Library System
  • SpringShare Applications, including LibGuides
  • WordPress

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
