This is a 9-month position

The RN will work collaboratively with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other members of the SU Health Services team to provide comprehensive clinical care for students¿ illnesses, injuries, immunizations and health education needs. Commonly performed clinical duties include obtaining vital signs and patient histories, physical assessment of the student, medication administration and injection, IV insertion/maintenance, specimen collection, telephone triage and in-person triage, sexual health screening and health education. In addition to the clinical duties, laboratory responsibilities include phlebotomy, specimen collection and point-of-care testing. The RN will be a per diem position reporting directly to the Nurse Manager. Standard hours of operation at the Barnes Center at The Arch are 830am to 5p, Evenings and weekend coverage may be needed.

Qualifications

RN, licensed to practice in the state of New York.

Job Specific Qualifications

Three years experience as an RN, preferably in ambulatory setting.

CPR certification.

Strong assessment skills.

Responsibilities

Walk-in Triage: Assessing patients who walk-in and require immediate assessment for higher acuity illnesses/injuries, nursing diagnosis and provide care advice, documenting clinical interactions in patient chart ( EMR ).

Telephone Triage: Responding to student inquiries regarding their health and medication. Assessing patients that call on the telephone to for minor illnesses/injuries and providing care advice. Assessing patients via telephone for higher acuity illnesses/injuries and making the determination to schedule an appointment or send to local emergency room.

Quick Care: Assessing students that present with minor illnesses, discussing their findings with a responsible provider, administering medications or other health care as ordered by the provider and providing educational materials and instructions to the student.

STI Clinic: Screening students in the RN based STI Clinic using the STI screening tool, ordering appropriate laboratory testing as per protocol, and providing sexual health education.

Point of care laboratory duties: perform CLIA waived laboratory testing on site, perform control testing for CLIA waived tests, occasional phlebotomy, entering lab results in EMR, stocking lab supplies, handling of specimens (including use of centrifuge), liaison to reference laboratory to assure timeliness of service and results.
