Monmouth University is seeking temporary Research Vessel Captains to operate 3 small vessels: 18 foot center console Parker, 27 foot Maycraft and 49 foot research vessel ex USCG 49 BUSL to support faculty research and educational activities for the School of Science, including the Biology department and Urban Coast Institute.
Required Degree, License or Certifications:
Valid Automobile Driver's License in your state of principal residence
Required Skills or Software:
Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
Required Years of Experience:
Valid US Coast Guard Master - Near Coastal, 100 ton license.
Current certified in Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer, Community First Aid and Safety or equivalent.
Experience operating vessels of similar size and navigating coastal waters of NJ including NY Harbor, Barnegat Bay and adjacent nearshore ocean waters.
Ability to conduct field work under a variety of weather conditions and moving decks, ability to climb ladders to 10 feet, and the ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
Must be available nights and weekends, and be able to pilot a vessel for extended periods of time safely.
Must be responsible and have the ability to navigate to destinations efficiently and effectively, and arrive on time.
Experience serving as a captain or senior crew member on a research, commercial or military vessel.
Experience with marine mechanical systems and hydraulics; vessel safety equipment; fishing techniques; and deployment and operation of marine and environmental sampling gear such as: otter trawls, plankton nets, bottom grabs, water quality monitoring devices and other gear.
Experience working with students in an educational setting.
