Biostatistics Faculty

The Department of Global and Community Health in the College of Health and Human Services at George Mason University is launching an open-rank search for a faculty member in biostatistics who is committed to academic excellence and to conducting original methodologic and collaborative research in public health. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff. Women, minorities, individuals with disabilities and veterans are encouraged to apply.

Though all research areas will be considered, preference will be given to applicants with expertise in causal inference or mediation analysis, latent variable modeling, exposome and mixtures analysis, randomized controlled trials, or longitudinal data analysis. Midcareer and senior candidates should have an active or recent history of externally-funded research, an established publication record, and evidence of effective classroom teaching commensurate for a tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. Early career candidates will demonstrate strong evidence of potential as an independent researcher to obtain external funding and show promise of effective classroom teaching.

This is a state-funded, full-time (9-month) tenure-track/tenured faculty position. Appointments will begin in August 2021, although other starting times might be possible. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and it strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive environment. The University recently established an Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence (ARIE) Task Force to make certain that Mason is an inclusive and equitable campus community where everyone is valued, supported and experiences a sense of belonging.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop or continue a program of original methodologic research;
  • Engage in collaborative research;
  • Teach and mentor students;
  • Establish or bring an extramurally funded research program;
  • Engage in professional service in support of advancing the College’s mission;
  • To the extent possible, faculty will be expected to contribute synergistically to development of courses, degree programs and research.

Required Qualifications:

  • An earned doctoral degree in biostatistics, statistics, or a closely-related field (e.g., epidemiology, computational sciences, quantitative methods);
  • Public health-related research experience; record of refereed publications;
  • Active or recent history of extramurally funded research for midcareer and senior candidates;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • An ability to teach graduate level biostatistics courses and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to candidates capable of collaborating with research teams focused on epidemiology or social and behavioral health, and leading their own methodologic and externally funded program of research with expertise in causal inference or mediation analysis, latent variable modeling, exposome and mixtures analysis, randomized controlled trials, or longitudinal data analysis;
  • Preference will be given to candidates that can teach a wide range of biostatistics courses for MPH and doctoral public health students.
