The Department of Health Policy and Community Health in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Professor. The home campus for this position will be the Armstrong campus in Savannah, Georgia.

Georgia Southern University was founded in 1906 as a school for teaching modern agricultural production techniques and homemaking skills to rural school children. Its Savannah campus was established in 1935 as Armstrong Junior College for local youth who could not afford to attend college away from home. The Liberty Center in Hinesville was established in 1998 to serve the military and their families at nearby Fort Stewart, the largest military base east of the Mississippi. All three locations came together in 2018 when Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University consolidated. The mission of the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health (JPHCOPH) is to improve health, eliminate health disparities and health inequities of rural communities and underserved populations globally through excellence in teaching, public health workforce development, research, scholarship, professional service and community engagement. Within this setting, JPHCOPH offers the Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH), Master of Public Health (MPH), and Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degrees, as well as a Certificate in Public Health (online). The BSPH degree has three emphasis areas: Health Education and Promotion, Environmental Health, and Global Health. The MPH program has six concentration areas: Biostatistics, Community Health, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Health Policy & Management, and Applied Public Health (online). The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree has five concentration areas: Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Community Health Behavior and Education, Health Policy, and Public Health Leadership (online). The Department of Health Policy and Community Health houses the DrPH in Health Policy, Public Health Leadership, and Community Health Behavior and Education. Additionally, the department houses the MPH in Health Policy and Management and Community Health.
Reporting to the department chair, the Assistant Professor will contribute to departmental and college teaching, professional service, and develop an extramurally funded research program. To complement current teaching, research, and professional services activities in the college, professional characteristics ideal for this position include the ability to articulate a clear approach to using her/his knowledge and skills to integrate principles and practices of public health into the traditional healthcare market. Potential for securing external funds is also a priority. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in public health; serve on dissertation committees in the college; provide service to the community; mentor students; serve on department, college, and university committees; engage in scholarship/creative activity leading to presentations at professional meetings and publications in peer-reviewed journals; and be actively involved in professional associations and outreach activities. The position is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
- Earned doctorate degree (DrPH, PhD, ScD) in Public Health or
closely related area by August 1, 2021;
- Proficiency and experience in Health Services Research, Health
Policy, Community Health/Health Education, Social Epidemiology, or
a closely related field, particularly with an emphasis on
Community-Based Participatory work;
- Proficiency and experience in quantitative and/or mixed-methods
- Demonstrated experience teaching in public health or related
- Willingness to engage with institutional student success
- Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in
instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and
- Must be authorized to work in the United States for the
duration of employment without assistance from the
- Demonstrated experience working in diverse clinical or other
- Demonstrated research experience in social and behavioral
- Demonstrated ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate
levels relying on multiple platforms of delivery, including online
and face-to-face instruction;
- Graduate with public health training from or teaching/work
experience in a CEPH accredited school or program;
- CEPH or MCHES certification.
