To provide visionary and collaborative leadership to build and promote Bethel’s study abroad programs in the College of Arts and Sciences; to provide operational oversight for study abroad programs; to support faculty in developing and leading study abroad programs; and to provide expertise in risk management, crisis management, and compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, including required reporting, for the University.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Primary/critical responsibilities

50%

Oversees the development and implementation of strategic plans and goals to build, support, and oversee Bethel’s study-abroad programs. Maintains relationships with educational organizations around the world. Visits international sites as necessary. Negotiates contracts for international and off-campus programs in the College of Arts & Sciences.

30%

Collaborates with Bethel faculty in the College of Arts & Sciences to develop and maintain programs. In conjunction with the International Studies Advisory Committee, administers program evaluations. With the Office of Academic Affairs, reviews and evaluates programs. Provides guidance in creating budgets for all Bethel study-abroad programs; evaluates and monitors budgets, including final reports. Oversees the budget of the Office of International and Off-Campus Programs. Creates and maintains policy manuals and program leader handbooks.

Provides oversight for development of effective risk management policies and procedures for study abroad; provides problem solving and crisis management with students and faculty during study-abroad programs; monitors safety concerns through state department and other and communicates with program leaders and administration as appropriate. Serves as first point of contact and support for faculty and students in the event of a significant crisis abroad (e.g., political unrest, natural disaster, serious injury or illness).

Oversees, advises, and ensures University compliance with all relevant federal laws and regulations, state, and University policies and procedures relating to international programs. Includes completing and submitting reports on safety and security issues abroad for all study abroad programs throughout the University.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education

Doctorate preferred; Master’s required.

Experience

5+ years of experience in higher education; teaching experience required.

 

Experience in developing, leading, or managing study-abroad programs; supervisory experience; significant travel experience required.  Demonstrated skill in building relationships with organizations in various parts of the world preferred.

Knowledge, skills, abilities

Knowledge of best practices in study abroad. Ability to manage budgets. Ability to develop effective working relationships across the university and around the world. Problem solving and crisis-management skills. 

Working Conditions

Must be able to work in a sitting position at a computer for extended periods of time.

Additional Information

1.00 FTE, 12 months

Must be accessible 24 hours a day and able to respond quickly in a crisis.

Must be able to travel outside of the country.

May be offered opportunities to teach.
