Resource Sharing Librarian

General Summary/Purpose

The Resource Sharing Librarian works with the Resource Sharing team and the Manager of Access, Assessment and User Experience (AAUX) to develop and lead user-focused, forward-thinking initiatives that support Johns Hopkins University (JHU) faculty, staff, students, and affiliates. This position proactively manages resource sharing operations including circulation, resource sharing (Borrow Direct and ILL), and delivery of material from the Sheridan Libraries physically and electronically.

This position continually assesses and improves resource sharing services. The role engages with users, the JHU-wide Resource Sharing Interest Group (RSIG), and in conjunction with the Manager of AAUX, analyzes and acts on user feedback and trends in resource sharing and access services. This position builds and sustains positive working relationships with campus researchers, library colleagues, and external resource sharing partners. The position works with the Manager of AAUX, to coordinate budget requests, expenditures, and assists with fiscal management related to Resource Sharing—preparing reports and providing documentation as needed. In collaboration with the Library Applications Group and the JHU-wide Resource Sharing Group, this role functions as the library services product owner for Illiad and champions Resource Sharing shared projects—collaborating with colleagues throughout the Johns Hopkins University Libraries and academic consortial communities to identify and implement innovative discovery-to-delivery services and service improvements evaluated by both cost effectiveness and the user experience.

This position supervises seven full-time staff with a focus on designing and improving Resource Sharing workflows. This position serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams as assigned. The position plays an active role as champion of strategic Resource Sharing projects that will align and streamline ILL across the Johns Hopkins libraries. JHU librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. The position reports to the Manager of Access, Assessment and User Experience.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Serves as primary liaison for resource sharing service and operational activities within JHU and with other institutions, including library consortia and institutions that have partnership agreements with the University

  • Manages and streamlines services that provide rapid delivery of print and digital documents from both the Libraries collections and other vendors
  • Monitors processes and workflows to develop and recommend improvements and updates
  • Evaluates and recommends new technology and services that could improve processes and workflow and/or provide cost-savings and actively assists in implementation when new technologies or services are adopted
  • Builds and sustains positive working relationships with campus researchers, library colleagues, and external resource sharing partners
  • Manages implementations of software used to in providing document delivery and ILL services – including OCLC's ILLiad and Odyssey systems, RAPID, and Occam's Reader, as well as other software that supports resource sharing such as Relais and the library integrated library system; functions as the product owner for ILLiad; maintains current knowledge of system updates and changes;
  • Actively promotes the services offered through the department
  • Maintains positive working relationships with the University's resource sharing partners in Maryland Independent Colleges and Universities Association (MICUA), Ivy Plus Libraries Confederation (IPLC), and others
  • Serves on appropriate library, university, and external committees and working groups;
  • Maintains knowledge of current national and international interlibrary loan codes, resource sharing best practices and trends
  • Oversees accurate statistics and reports in a timely manner

Minimum Qualifications(Required)

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or an advanced related degree.
  • Three (3) years professional library experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment
  • Experience with ILLiad and Odyssey or other ILL management system (ILLiad preferred)
  • Working knowledge of either an Integrated Library System or Library Management Platform
  • Knowledge of scholarly communication trends and inter-institutional resource sharing
  • 3-5 years of library experience preferably in Resource Sharing with some supervisory experience preferred

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or an advanced related degree.
  • 3 years professional library experience.
  • Knowledge related to managing circulation in a library setting
  • Knowledge of current issues in resource sharing
  • Ability to provide and promote delivery of excellent services

  • Experience developing, implementing, and interpreting goals, policies, and procedures
  • Experience with, or knowledge of, budget and billing practices.
