Purpose of Position

The Department of Computer Science (www.nku.edu/csc) invites applications for one Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Data Science position beginning Fall 2021. This position is part of an undergraduate program in Data Science launched at NKU in 2013, it spans the departments of Computer Science and Mathematics & Statistics with focus areas in Biology, Business Informatics, and Geographic Information Systems.

The Department of Computer Science is part of the College of Informatics (http://informatics.nku.edu), which unites the departments of Computer Science, Business Informatics, and Communication to embrace the modern concept of information in all its aspects. The College moved into its $52 million-dollar building named Griffin Hall in August 2011. The Computer Science department offers five undergraduate majors (Applied Software Engineering, Computer Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, and Data Science), and it is working towards a new graduate degree program (MSc. in Cybersecurity). The department has approximately 750 undergraduate students majoring in those areas. There are currently 25 full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty members, 1 Professor of Practice, and 4 full-time lecturers in the department. Primary Responsibilities

The selected candidate will teach classes in the program’s core, including but not limited to data wrangling, data mining, data analytics and visualization, and machine learning. The selected candidate will be expected to conduct research that is, at least in part, in the area of data science, and collaborate with other researchers both in and outside of the department and/or area. A successful applicant must contribute to maintaining a rigorous and relevant curriculum for this program, in collaboration with other participating departments. All candidates must commit to promote and foster a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Above all, Northern Kentucky University values quality teaching. Also, tenure-track faculty members are expected to be active scholars. The incorporation of students into research is especially appreciated. All faculty members are expected to provide service to the department, University, or the community. This includes curriculum development at either the undergraduate or graduate level.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or ABD with PhD completion by May 2021 in Computer Science or a closely related field.
