Internal Candidate Identified

As a leader on the Digital Team within the Division of Marketing and Communications ( DMC ), the Director of Web Development will create and set strategic direction for web development done on Syracuse University campus. The Director will lead a team of highly technical front-end, back-end developers, platform architects, and system administrators. The Director will lead the team to make strategic decisions in the creation of high quality, world-class web experiences for desktop and mobile devices across the university’s digital landscape. The Director of Web Development will create, articulate and set web development standards in the creation of services, features, and components to develop and maintain the central web presence of Syracuse University. The Director will focus on integrations between existing systems and Additionally, this position will collaborate and work closely with the University’s ITS division. The team will work with the UNIX, virtual enterprise technology, and information security teams to leverage the University’s Virtual Hosting Environment ( VHE ) for server operations and monitor emerging security threats, responding to vulnerability reports.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent amount of education and work experience.

• Minimum eight (8) years of work experience related to web development management, web design, development and maintenance.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Strong management and communication skills.

• A positive team player with a solution-oriented mindset.

• Industry leading knowledge and experience with fundamental web technologies like HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

• Strong Experience with JavaScript frameworks such as Vue.js, Angular.js, and React.js.

• Strong familiarity with server-side languages such as Python, PHP, Java, and .Net.

• Familiarity with database technology such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle and MongoDB.

• Strong experience with accessible and responsive web design and development.

• Experience working with content management systems including WordPress and Cascade.

• Experience designing and implementing quality assurance testing procedures with strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Create and direct strategic priorities, team direction, technical and quality assurance standards for the university to facilitate the development of best of breed web applications and services.

• The director has authority and influence to innovate as well as set standards across the university’s digital platforms.

• Responsible for the infrastructure of web applications to ensure security, uptime, accessibility and code standards are adhered to.

• Direct, provide oversight and mentorship to team of developers to create and implement websites, features, components and web services.

• Manage development projects from start to finish ensuring on-time delivery and quality assurance standards.

• Serve as subject matter expert influencing technical decisions and advising internal teams and campus partners.

• Work with analytics team to develop strategic approaches to web analytics, tagging, and tracking.

• Facilitates collaborative coding opportunities the university developer community.

Debug and troubleshoot website issues as needed.

• Monitor analytics, logs, and reports.

• Keep abreast of industry trends, tools and best practices.
