Primary Purpose of Position:
The Employee Relations Consultant is responsible for establishing and continuously maintaining effective, cooperative day-to-day communications with NCCU managers, employees, and other Human Resources staff. This position will serve as a proactive change agent who will act as a consultant and coach to employees and managers in the area of employee relations. The Employee Relations Consultant will proactively work with managers to build teams and retain staff. The incumbent will advise, counsel, and support management staff in application of HR processes, policies and procedures and implementing strategies that support the goals of the organization, as well as represent management in administrative legal forums when appropriate.

Minimum Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and two years of progressively responsible professional human resources management experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.

Knowledge-Professional - Journey
Knowledge of employee relations laws, policies and best practices, with a demonstrated ability to exercise keen judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting a variety of interrelated policies, procedures and programs for customers and address customers non-routing issues.

Knowledge of efficient ways to capture and analyze information and data, using various tools, systems and programs to meet changing work needs; proposes using alternative methods as appropriate.

Demonstrated ability to management an investigative process, obtain and verify information by conducting interviews, assessing witness information, analyzing data, and preparing reports that detail investigative findings, draw appropriate conclusions, and offer appropriate best-practice solutions.

Consultation - Journey
Advises and collaborates with customers to resolve difficult issues. Recognizes the impact of policies, procedures, and laws; applies knowledge and understanding of campus organizational culture, issues and work relationships to address situations; shares knowledge and critical thinking process and promotes the use of best practices to achieve mutually agreeable outcomes in the resolution of the issues.
Develops and maintains productive collaborative work relationships in order to facilitate problem resolution; applies ongoing constructive feedback and response skills and techniques through clear communications with clients or assigned staff
Determines and documents a course of action to address complex, ambiguous or
unique operational and/or programmatic issues.

Communication - (Written and Verbal) - Journey
Ability to communicate effectively with employees and management on a one-on-one or group bases, to establish and maintain professional effective working relationship with all levels and areas of the organization, and to work with senior administrators on complex employee relations issues and other sensitive issues.
Presents information to a variety of audiences in a clear and concise manner with all levels of the campus in order to ensure understanding and credibility.
Conveys sensitive information or decisions to customers regardless of the risks involved. Works toward mutual resolutions that are in the best interests of the campus and the departmental unit.
Drafts a variety of written communications in order to explain solutions, convey decisions, interpret policy and train/coach. Creates interesting presentations using a variety of media and adapts style and tone to convey meaningful information with different audiences.

Education and Experience Required: What educational background is needed to perform these duties and responsibilities? What kind of work experience is needed?
Minimum Education and Experience
Graduation from a four-year college or university and two years of progressively responsible experience analyzing, interpreting, applying, communicating and promoting HR best practices in the context of organizational goals and objectives; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Education and Experience
Master’s degree in human resources or related field.
