The Mellon College of Science (MCS) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a dynamic, collaborative college that is home to four departments -- Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematical Sciences, and Physics -- as well as many programs and research centers that cross disciplines. In all of it departments, programs, and research centers, MCS is firmly committed to a diverse workforce and an inclusive environment where principles of fair and equitable treatment define the culture.

MCS seeks an innovative, collaborative, and knowledgeable professional to serve as its first Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).

The incumbent will lead a team of individuals who will help influence and shape all college-level DEI initiatives. Specifically, the incumbent will help to refine existing initiatives and develop new ones; will assist in fostering a college community that supports a welcoming/inclusive culture; and will facilitate the implementation of programs and other activities aimed at increasing, supporting, and retaining a faculty, staff, and student body that is diverse.

The college maintains a DEI Strategic Plan. The incumbent will be responsible for designing and implementing actions, in a fiscally responsible manner, that will enable the achievement of the goals in the Plan. The incumbent will partner with CMU’s Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion in providing additional programming and support for our students, including student organizations geared to the diverse community. The incumbent will anticipate and help address DEI issues at the college, and will represent the college and the dean at appropriate university and national functions.

We seek an individual with proven experience in student and/or faculty DEI programming and strategic planning alongside outstanding academic credentials. Our expectation is that this individual will report directly to the Dean, will have an academic track-record suitable for appointment as tenure-track, teaching track or research track faculty in one of the College’s four departments, and will fulfill the majority of responsibilities as a member of the Dean’s leadership team. The position requires qualifications suitable for an appointment as a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon with preferred qualifications suitable for appointment as a tenured faculty. Depending on the faculty track, the successful candidate will have a teaching record and research program that matches the expectations of the track.

MCS will consider both internal and external applications. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled; complete applications received by December 1, 2020 will be assured full consideration. Qualified individuals should submit a cover letter that addresses the responsibilities and requirements described here within, curriculum vitae, DEI statement, as well as a teaching and/or research statement via Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/79919

Carnegie Mellon University challenges the curious and passionate to imagine and deliver work that matters.

A private, global research university, Carnegie Mellon stands among the world's most renowned educational institutions, and sets its own course. Start the journey here.

Over the past 10 years, more than 400 startups linked to CMU have raised more than $7 billion in follow-on funding. Those investment numbers are especially high because of the sheer size of Pittsburgh’s growing autonomous vehicles cluster – including Uber, Aurora, Waymo and Motional – all of which are here because of their strong ties to CMU.

With cutting-edge brain science, path-breaking performances, innovative startups, driverless cars, big data, big ambitions, Nobel and Turing prizes, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn't imagine the future, we create it.

Many seek Pittsburgh for being a hot spot for entrepreneurship and a model for future cities. Others come for the city's burgeoning food scene.
