The Director of Development, Marketing and Communications is a full-time exempt position with MMRI responsible for overseeing the Office of Development, Marketing and Communications and reporting to the Executive Director. The position will provide leadership, strategic direction, management, and coordination for all aspects of the program's development and marketing efforts to raise the philanthropic resources necessary to support and grow MMRI programs and initiatives. This individual will be responsible for growing MMRI’s philanthropic revenue significantly over the next several years and diversifying the organization’s funder base.

As a leader in the organization, serving the Institute in multiple capacities, this position requires a sophisticated and comprehensive understanding of major gift fundraising principles and practices, ability to maintain knowledge and professional development in market research, business trends and fundraising trends that may impact needs and resources.  The ideal candidate will exhibit extremely high levels of professionalism, collegiality, self-motivation, organization and familiarity with the goals and objectives of MMRI, and of the entire Freemasons organization and their lodges. Additionally, excellent communication, presentation and writing skills are necessary and the ability to collaborate with colleagues throughout MMRI. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide leadership, strategic direction, management, and coordination for all aspects of the program's development, marketing and communications efforts including the implementation of a Strategic Development, Marketing, and Communications Plan. Supervise the development, marketing, and communications staff to ensure team success. Recruit, lead, evaluate, mentor, inspire and retain staff with fundraising and marketing responsibilities to empower performance excellence in their roles. Strategically grow staffing capacity as growth in resources allow and the acquisition and stewardship of those resources require. Create a working environment that is rewarding to staff.  Assure that the organization's culture, systems, and procedures support fund development.
  2. Provide effective, engaging, and innovative communications. Present a compelling case to catalyze interest, link donor aspirations to needs and secure support. Distill complex information into a simple, clear message using examples, stories, and community information that is relevant and resonates with the donor, volunteer, and strategic partner. Write clearly and concisely, using multiple platforms to reach diverse audiences. Develop and implement a comprehensive year-round communication plan to keep supporters and partners informed and engaged. Execute the development and implementation of social marketing, public and media relations, website content, communication/resource development materials and brand management.

 

  1. Serve as a member of the MMRI leadership team by participating in group strategy discussions, providing project leadership when requested by management, sharing information with colleagues, and contributing to the achievement of the overall mission and strategic goals of MMRI.

 

  1. Manage a broad portfolio of major gift prospects at various stages of their relationship with MMRI, including prospecting, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.  Portfolio will be both established through the assignment process and built through prospecting efforts. In addition to reaching a minimum of 100 personal visits annually with prospective donors, the Director is expected to close a minimum of 10 $50k+ gifts and pledges each fiscal year, including at least 2 bequest intentions or planned gifts. 
  2. Develop and implement appropriate prospect strategies to move prospects through the moves- management giving cycle. In addition to face to face visits, utilize various communication methods such as phone and correspondence to keep donors informed and connected to MMRI. 

 

  1. Actively seek and qualify new prospects for the MMRI major gift pipeline through referrals from prospects, list reviews and other methods that may develop throughout the fiscal year.  Proactively work to engage and cultivate all new prospects identified, including those newly added to the portfolio by Research through the assignment process. Complete and maintain current data tracking for the entire prospect portfolio in NXT.  This includes timely completion of contact reports, updating prospect stages, next step tasks, and proposals.

 

 

  1. Support administrator and faculty travel to regions, Institute visits, and written administrator communication.  Staff Executive Director as appropriate and provide accurate and timely preparation, including planning logistics and writing briefings, as well as prompt follow up.

 

 

  1. Actively seek to improve professional skill and knowledge and understanding of MMRI by developing collaborative relationships with colleagues across the Institute attending events and activities and participating in training activities for the Development, Marketing and Communications team designed for this purpose. Build strong working relationships with colleagues from the Science Departments to proactively maximize the size of gifts from donors. Actively engage MMRI volunteers, including Board members, by identifying how they can best assist our efforts and helping volunteers pursue and manage these activities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree required. 5-7 years of frontline major gift experience with demonstrated ability to grow a donor prospect base and successfully close five and six-figure individual and institutional gifts. Experience working in academic medical or complex research institutions strongly preferred. Some experience working with foundations and/or corporations is preferred.

Must have an even disposition and be able to deal effectively and politely with people from all types of backgrounds and experiences in all types of difficult situations.  Must have the ability to evaluate problems accurately and display good, sound, and confidential judgment.  Must be highly organized, detail oriented, and efficient.  Must maintain a professional and caring demeanor and have a strong and tenacious work ethic.  Must be collaborative, conscientious, and results oriented.  Must have the ability to innovate, think strategically, and conceptually, manage multiple projects simultaneously and handle even difficult situations with a sense of humor.  Must be able to listen carefully as well as to influence and persuade others.

  • Must be motivated to learn and flexible to change. Excellent public speaking and presentation skills and written communication skills required.  Must be creative and proactive, yet disciplined, discriminating and able to streamline work volume to maintain bottom line efforts in midst of multi-tasking and daily re-prioritizing, with manager’s guidance.

  • Travel expectations required with approximately 25 percent of working days on the road, depending on internal assignments.

  • Computer literacy required; must have experience with Windows and appropriate databases, such as Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge NXT, or similar donor management software.
