As part of the Dean’s Office External Affairs Team for the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, the Content Editor will follow established University brand standards and strategy, governance, and approach to help execute the School’s vision for an integrated approach to storytelling across print and digital media. A polished and creative communicator, writer, and editor, as well as a strategic thinker, the Content Editor will work collaboratively to develop strategies and tell stories that drive audiences towards a desired outcome. As the primary editor for the Maxwell School’s alumni magazine, Maxwell Perspective, they will lead its transformation from a semi-annual printed magazine to a year-round, digital-first publication supported by timely social and email engagement and a companion print publication; ensuring its alignment with other campus publications. Reporting to the Maxwell School’s Director of Communications and Media Relations, the Content Editor will also collaborate with the division of marketing and communications and contribute to the creation of a variety of digital content and print collateral material as needed to support institutional goals for advancement/fundraising, alumni relations, and recruitment, and enhance the school’s reputation for excellence in research in teaching. This is a highly collaborative, hands-on position that involves both strategy and execution, and some supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in English language arts, marketing, communications, or related field from an accredited university.

• Five years of experience with increasing levels of responsibility for reporting, writing and editing feature stories and other types of content for distribution in digital and print media.

• A strong understanding of current industry standards and techniques for digital content creation and management; knowledge of best practices for UX, social media, SEO and online lead development strategies.

• Demonstrated ability to plan, oversee, and measure the execution of successful content marketing strategies across multiple channels.

• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to establish new systems and protocols and ensure their successful adoption.

• Familiarity with the processes and protocols for print production, partnering and collaborating with designers and printers on the execution.

• Excellent project management skills; must be able to work collaboratively to complete projects on deadline and within budget.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills as well as highly collaborative nature; ability to facilitate work between a wide range of individuals and groups from diverse campus departments.

• Adaptable and confident problem solver, able to generate actionable insights by analyzing data.

• Some experience with Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign and Photoshop, for the purpose of helping to create banners, buttons and other elements as needed is desirable, but not required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain year-round digital presence for a reimagined digital-first alumni magazine, aggregating relevant news content from across the school and university, collaborating and sharing story ideas and content with communications colleagues across campus, writing original content, and generating timely Class Notes. Create and share stories about the Maxwell and the accomplishments of faculty, students and alumni worldwide in coordination with Marketing Content teams.

• Publish articles and photos to content management system, incorporating and observing best practices for digital publishing, including ensuring compliance with all brand, editorial, and accessibility policies and standards of Syracuse University. Create engaging summary cards, copy and visuals for promotion across the website and digital channels including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram. Partner in collaboration with Syracuse University’s Division of Marketing and Communications.

• Curate and edit the Maxwell School’s semi-annual printed alumni magazine, leveraging popular content from the website and other news sources and creating supplementary material as needed. Partner with designers and freelance writers within and outside of the University as needed on design and production.

• Following established university brand standards, devise story concepts and treatments that represent the spirit, inquiry, innovativeness and academic integrity and depth of the School. Beyond alumni publications, contribute to additional editorial projects for the broader EA team, writing stories that demonstrate the excellence and impact of Maxwell faculty, students, staff and alumni and inspire stakeholder groups to take action. Diverse stakeholder audiences include alumni, donors, and peers, as well as the campus community, incorporating best practices for digital publishing, display and sharing.

• As part of a broader team with shared responsibilities, assist with the creation of a range of printed and digital collateral material, which may include advancement brochures, appeal letters, donor reports, and reputation-building publications that support the School’s ranking as #1 for public affairs (US News.). Collaborate with the Director of Alumni relations to create occasional alumni e-mail newsletters and other electronic communications.

• Uphold and strengthen the University’s and the School’s commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion. Participate in available workshops and training on best practices for communicating with diverse audiences. Identify additional opportunities for professional development around best practices to support DEI in communications.

• Generate data driven reports, anaylze results, and make recommendations for continuous improvement.
