Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job

The Department of World Languages and Cultures ( WOLC ) and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences ( CHSS ) at Sam Houston State University ( SHSU ) invite applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty member in Spanish at the rank of Assistant Professor. The required teaching load is 6 courses annually and consists of teaching Spanish language courses, as well as related courses in Spanish or English (with online and face-to-face delivery) at the elementary, intermediate, advanced, and graduate levels. The start date for this position is August 2021.

Teaching responsibilities are both at the main SHSU campus in Huntsville, Texas (located 70 miles north of Houston) and online. Educational Requirements for the Position

Qualifications:
Candidates must have an earned PhD by August 2021 in Spanish language pedagogy, applied linguistics or related field (e.g., second or foreign language pedagogy, languages in contact, bilingualism/multilingualism, Hispanic studies, language-learning technology, etc.) with documented interest and/or expertise in Spanish for professional purposes. Candidates who are ABD at the time of application must have a scheduled defense before August 2021 for their application to be considered.

Preference will be given to candidates who have knowledge of and/or experience with foreign language pedagogy, second language acquisition, Spanish for heritage speakers, and/or Hispanic-serving institutions.

Required Application Materials:

1) a cover letter clearly addressing research and teaching experience;
2) a diversity statement demonstrating commitment to working with diverse student populations, faculty, and communities;
3) a full CV;
4) a copy of graduate transcripts (must include a minimum of 18 graduate hours in Spanish courses);
5) a statement of teaching philosophy;
6) evidence of teaching excellence (including student perceptions and peer/supervisor observation reports);
7) a statement presenting current and future research in field of specialization (providing a summary of research accomplishments and an agenda for future research in the field of specialization); and
8) three recent letters of recommendation (preferably at least one letter will address candidate’s promise as a teacher).
