Primary Function

The Counselor/Coordinator has primary responsibility for: providing academic guidance, conducting afterschool tutoring and academic workshops; scheduling and overseeing college visits, community service and cultural enrichment activities.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)

The Counselor/Coordinator conducts orientation sessions with middle and high school students, screens and evaluates new student applicants, and implements academic year off campus class instruction and tutoring. The Advisor Associate meets with parents, arranges transportation for tutors during the academic year and for student participants during the summer program and academic year.

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position

1. Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, or related academic area.
2. Two (2) years of full time work experience as a secondary instructor, counselor, or administrator in academic counseling, performing student needs assessment and college preparation and placement.

1. A Master’s degree is preferred.
2. Bilingual- English/Spanish.
3. Candidates should have experience as a secondary instructor, counselor, or administrator including at least 3 years of experience working with Upward Bound, Talent Search or GEARUP students.
4. Strong assessment and group counseling skills and significant involvement with secondary level students who represent a cross-section of minority groups and are frequently first generation college attendees who also demonstrate a wide range of academic skill levels.

Administration and Management — Knowledge of business and management principles involved in the presentation and delivery of academic programs, strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques, recruitment methods, and coordination of people and resources; must be able to work independently.

4. Active Listening — Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

5. Critical Thinking — Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

6. Knowledge of educational, evaluation, and measurement principles, practices, methods, and techniques, high school and university policies and procedures.

7. Speaking — Talking to others to convey information effectively; ability to develop a rapport with students; must be an effective public speaker.

8. Written Expression — The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand. Excellent writing skills are required which includes the ability to compose various correspondence, evaluation or assessment reports, and make contribution to the formulation of proposals.

9. Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff; enjoy creating educational opportunities for youth.
