Job Summary/Basic Function

The Liberty University School of Engineering ( LUSE ) seeks an Associate Dean of Research, who would assist the Dean in facilitating all college activities and to provide leadership toward achievement of excellence in teaching, research, and service activities. LUSE currently comprises Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, and Computer Engineering Departments with a forthcoming Civil Engineering Department and a forthcoming Computational Sciences and Engineering Department being a virtual department in which faculty from other departments can partake. The areas of research interest include Solid Mechanics (e.g., fatigue, fracture, metal processing, damage mechanics, and constitutive modeling), Thermal Sciences (e.g., energy systems, renewable energy, combustion, fluid dynamics), Materials (metallurgy, computational materials, materials characterization), Computational Mechanics (e.g., numerical methods, finite element analysis, etc.) and Design (e.g., materials design, product design, systems design, environment and sustainability, robust design and uncertainty quantification). Candidates in other areas will also be considered. Successful candidates will be expected to help develop internationally-recognized, externally-funded, sustainable research programs and to make significant contributions to the school’s teaching and service responsibilities.
The LUSE offers an ABET -accredited undergraduate program as well as graduate studies leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. In addition, LUSE offers undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. distance learning programs as well as residential programs. The LUSE is just starting to grow as LU has invested in growing the engineering program.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in engineering or a closely aligned field. Candidates are expected to have a demonstrated administrative experience. Furthermore, the ability to conduct research at the highest level is important. Candidates need to clearly indicate in the cover letter their area of research interest as well (Solid Mechanics, Thermal Sciences, Materials, Computational, or Design). The Associate Dean of Research will support the Dean’s vision and mission of creating a new graduate program with M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The job entails garnering funds for specific research areas, developing large scale research programs, and conducting personal research in his/her own field of expertise. The Associate Dean of Research may teach undergraduate and/or graduate level courses and serve the LUSE . Applicants must demonstrate a personal faith in Jesus Christ and help train the next generation of Champions for Christ as per the Liberty University mission. Duties also include maintaining the graduate curriculum, courses of study, and assessment of work.

The high level activities include:
-Assist the Dean with the management of administrative functions
-Collaborate with Dean on planning college strategic initiatives and supports on college fundraising
-Provide administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management
-Help manage the subordinate managers and professionals
-Provide input to strategic decisions

In terms of graduate education, The Associate Dean of Research is expected to:
-Help the Dean to establish the research paradigm, programs, and projects within the school
-Establish a distance learning program
-Partake in graduate committees
-Garner funds for M.S./Ph.D. students
-Advise M.S./Ph.D. students
-Teach graduate level courses
-Propose and develop new courses as determined appropriate

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in any engineering field or a relevant field.

Applicants must demonstrate a personal faith commitment to the University’s evangelical Christian purpose.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference is given to candidates with a terminal degree in an engineering field.

Work Hours

This is a residential position for 40 hours per week.
