Position Details

The Wesleyan Investments Office is charged with the day to day management of the Wesleyan endowment. The primary objective of the endowment is to provide enduring support for the academic mission of the University by releasing a sustainable and reliable flow of funds to the operating budget, thereby enhancing Wesleyan’s long-term financial stability and supporting excellence in programs, personnel, and facilities.

Reporting to the Chief Investment Officer, the Investment Analyst has the opportunity to engage in practical hands-on work at the Investments Office while gaining exposure to a wide array of asset classes and interacting with some of the world’s best investors.

The Investment Analyst will also have exposure to the inner workings of the University financial system from spending to budgeting and beyond for a deeper understanding of the endowment’s position within the greater Wesleyan ecosystem.

The Investment Analyst plays a supporting role as a member of the investment team, helping to manage the endowment’s assets, track its performance and hone the systems and processes that serve as a foundation for its future growth.

The Investment Analyst is an active participant in the sourcing and vetting of new managers, in addition to the ongoing monitoring of current partnerships.

The Investment Analyst will receive extensive training to build a foundation for a successful investment career.

The Investment Analyst will have the opportunity to learn financial theory and analytical techniques through the highly regarded Chartered Financial Analyst ( CFA ) program. Further training in accounting, Excel, Bloomberg, Morningstar and other systems will also be sponsored by the Investments Office.

Responsibilities Include:

Monitoring and analyzing investment objectives, capital allocation decisions, investment performance and investment policies.

Assisting in the screening, selection, and monitoring of money managers through background research, manager meetings, and portfolio analyses.

Manager interaction including travel across the United States and world.

Quantitatively and qualitatively monitoring the investments of existing portfolio managers.

Tracking and monitoring portfolio risks.

Conducting research and analysis and preparing information on a variety of investment topics.

Articulating investment theses and research through presentations.

Preparing materials for the investment committee and board of trustees.

Serving as a representative of the University throughout the investment community.

Maintaining internal databases and research management systems on a daily, monthly and/or quarterly basis.

Actively participating in manager meetings with responsibility for notes, memos and other follow-up analysis.

Portfolio analysis – performance analytics including return attribution and exposure analysis.

Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree and a basic understanding of investment theory and practice.

Record of outstanding academic achievement.

Demonstrated desire to be part of a collaborative, problem-solving investment team.

Demonstrated passion for critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving within a team environment.

Strong quantitative skills.

Computer savvy with knowledge of Excel.

Interest in portfolio theory and investments.

Strong interpersonal and effective communication skills.

Excellent writing skills.

A strong desire to support the University’s academic mission.

Willingness to complete the CFA program while working for the Investments Office (sponsored by Wesleyan).

Adherence to a strict code of ethics and conflict of interest policy.

Willingness to travel domestically regularly and internationally as needed.

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and work collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.
